Chance Me! VA resident, 4.0 UW, 1540 SAT, for ED to Wharton

attend a Title I public school in Virginia (Greater than 50% of student body qualifies for free school lunch program). ranked 3/447 SAT 1540 (790 M, 750 R), Varsity Basketball Captain, President of Beta Club, in IB program, participated in summer governors school and boys state. Getting into Wharton ED certainly sounds possible.

Would you want to play D3 basketball? If so, is your preference for Wharton over the top business programs at D3 schools (like NYU Stern, CMU Tepper, Emory Goizueta, WashU Olin, and possibly Claremont McKenna) strong enough to foreclose on the D3 option?

I always think it is worth noting that Penn says:

In Applicants to the Wharton School, We Would Like to See:

  • An interest in business to fuel positive change to advance the world’s economic and social well-being
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Strong preparation in mathematics, particularly calculus

Assuming you believe you fit all that, you know you can comfortably afford Wharton, and you would not have any interest in comparing other offers, then with those credentials I think it is fine to ED Wharton and see what happens.

Thanks. My parents can afford it. I’ve had leadership positions in clubs and was one of 450 to go to boys state Virginia. I placed 2nd in marketing in Virginia in FBLA and went to nationals. My non profit has fed over 40,000 meals in the last 3 years and is focused on the issue of food insecurity in our community. Thanks

I would love to play DIII. The coaches at MIT just reached out and had a Zoom call with me earlier this week

Ooh, yeah, I forgot Sloan!

Would love to be in Boston and at sloan

As I’m sure you’re aware by now, the coaches at MIT don’t have as much “pull” as at other schools, so it’s a bit of a gamble to pass up ED1 elsewhere to EA at MIT with coach support. Might be worth going for it, though, if it would be your top choice both academically and athletically. And some of the other D3’s have ED2 and might still be willing to offer coach support in that cycle if MIT doesn’t work out. (I know coach support in ED2 can be a thing in some sports but I don’t know about your sport specifically.) You’d have to pass up ED1 to Wharton, though. Tough call - best of luck with the process!!
