Ignore the ■■■■■

[last post]

…
Why are you calling me a ■■■■■?

^I think you are definitely in. How did you do self studies on all those AP subjects? You are probably discouraging other applicants. Do you know what you want to major in ? What you want to do ultimately? what is CAS?

I am not here to “discourage” any applicants. I just wanted to do a chance thread, like a typical CC-er. I have been lurking for a while.

Self-studying APs are not very difficult. If you plan a year ahead, and memorize two terms per day, it is quite sufficient. I began “real-prep” in January, doing FRQs and DBQs for history exams.

I am bilingual, so Spanish and French AP tests and SAT subject tests are a piece of cake to me.

I put Chemistry for all my applications, and I want to work in a research institute.

CAS is Creativity, Action, and Service for IB Diploma.
In IB, you have to finish mandatory components in order to receive a full diploma( which is why people think it is harder than AP). It is community service.

If you get in all of them, how will you choose? Any preference? You can enroll in only one college, if you didn’t know yet.

Decision: Wait 7 days for an email

I am thinking about MIT.
Caltech offers me incredible research opportunities and internship offers with the Giants in the Silicon Valley, but I am still not sure.

Harvard does not have a good engineering department, but great alumni connections.
I am not sure.

Cambridge could be an option, too.
[World’s Best Universities: Top 400 - US News and World Report](http://www.usnews.com/education/worlds-best-universities/articles/2010/09/21/worlds-best-universities-top-400-)

I got into number 1, 4, and 5.

^ Chemistry is not engineering. I would say, engineering go to MIT, science (physics, chemistry, bio) go to caltech. Both MIT and Caltech have most of freshman years only Pass/Fail. in terms of friendliness and surroundings, caltech will be much more welcoming environment than mit. but both are great for science minded people. i would say the research opps will be more plenty with it too. you should visit both campuses before deciding.

Yes, I am quite aware of that. I was thinking about Chemical engineering, but I am passionate in all the sciences.

Visited Caltech, MIT not yet.

What about Harvard?

Did not take multivariable calculus and linear algebra yet. I am thinking of getting a tutor in summer or something. Anyone self-studied linear algebra? I know that they have some clips in khanacademy.org, but not quite sure whether it is sufficient.

@OP: I don’t know, the 44/45 IB score could SEVERELY hurt your chances. Better reserve a spot at your local community college, just in case.

While his IB score does hurt his chances quite significantly, I think for one second that he definitely has a chance, no matter how slim.

As everyone can agree, Harvard is a gamble for anyone. It’s all about quotas and luck, mostly. Edit: and bribery

Remember, Harvard has the connections, as you said. And you can take classes at MIT. And do research at the labs sprinkled all over Cambridge. Plus, you have a potentially decent social life which you probably wouldn’t have at either of the grand tech schools.

^What do you have against Harvard?
Why are you spamming the Harvard board with your meaningless crap?

^I am aware of the ROTC programs between MIT and Harvard.
Actually, a friend of mine goes to Caltech, and he loves it. Social life is pretty good according to him.

@Haftbefehl,

There are different global rankings such as
THE WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKINGS 2010 (Times, Thomson Reuters)
[Top 200 - The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010-2011](World University Rankings 2010-11 | Times Higher Education (THE))

US Students look at this US News, National University Rankings, not the one you posted:
[National University Rankings | Top National Universities | US News Best Colleges](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities)

Thanks!

Times and Thomson Reuters ranking is also very commonly used.

The US News Ranking is the NATIONAL ranking, excluding all the British universities.
They are from the same organization- US News and World Report.

I tend to use the GLOBAL rankings, since I am interested in British universities too.

@Haftbefehl are you an American Citizen or Permanent Resident?

^s/he lives in Spain, born of spanish mom and french dad. So i am guessing he is not american citizen or permanent resident. At least he is not an ORM, making it a good situation for him. Were you accepted to MIT ?

Haftbefehl, there’s more than just ROTC. You can actually cross-register for basically any class at Harvard if you go to MIT and vice-versa.
