At a top prep school, your toughest competition is your classmates. Those schools tend to be chock full of legacies, children of the powerful and wealthy and recruited athletes. It’s not the top 30% who get the ivy seats.

The first thing to do is look at the school’s scattergrams. The second thing is to look around you and see who else is applying to each school from your class. Look at the number already accepted ED and the average number typically taken.

Did you apply somewhere ED/EA as 75% of prep school kids usually do?

You will undoubtedly get into a great college, but do add a real safety or two.

Very few people in my school apply EA/ED, as our school’s policy forbids us from sending out more applications (they won’t send out transcripts), if we are accepted early, regardless of whether it is under EA or ED, to reduce inter-school competition.

My college counselor continues to reassure me, but as my school is mainly liberal arts oriented, I believe she overestimates the power of my math to get me into college; I am not a MOSP qualifier or anything of a similar level. Also, of course, there is the problem of legacy and well-connected people at my school.

I am planning on applying to a safety as well.
