You might look at the Common Data set for NC State, in Sections C7 and C9-C11. Section C7 lists both academic and non-academic admissions factors considered by the school, and how they are weighted in admissions decisions; Sections C9-C11 provide objective data in the form of test scores and GPA for recently matriculated students at NC State. This can provide a crude estimate of admissions chances (understanding that the test scores and GPAs of engineering students on average are going to be higher than those the overall general student population).
You might also have a conversation with the guidance counselor at your son’s high school: the GC should know the historical data about acceptances to NC State from your son’s high school; and if the high school has a software program such as Naviance available for students/parents, that can provide some useful information as well.
If you haven’t met with your son’s GC, then you should make an appointment (with your son) to talk to the GC.
