Stats are strong. ECs look good. Like so many applicants, she has a decent chance; nothing stands out negatively or positively.

^ Agreed. I think if your friend wants to up her chances, she needs to make something in her ECs stand out. Maybe take advantage of the summer. Aside from that, her gpa and SATs are pretty great.

Summer going into soph year, she worked at a summer camp in China
Summer going into this year (junior), she went on a trip to Spain with the Spanish Language department at our school

H & Y are reaches for anybody.
Wes would be a match for you (but make sure you show interest...)

I really wish that people would stop writing this on chance threads. I have seen it probably 1,000 times before, and it never does anybody any good.

thank g_d for the Common Application. I had to reach nearly the end of the post to see that she may be an editor-in-chief of the Lit zine next year. It's her most important EC and it's practically buried (I mean, it may, in fact, be a completely b.s. position, but there' no reason the adcom needs to know that.)

No, not EIC of lit magazine - I worded it incorrectly... just in charge of editing non-fiction pieces for the magazine.

Actually, I will be the EIC :]

^ Ha ha. :)

Well, it's the truth. Anybody who thinks they can "chance" someone for H or Y is kidding themselves. It's the only reasonable response when asked this question.

^ I dislike the use of those terms in the first place because they don't really mean anything objective or universal. Thus, using them as your sole response is completely meaningless. Plus, calling all applicants reaches for the Ivies disregards the reality that some people do indeed have better chances than others for those schools; it's not random.

^ of course some people have better chances than others. Many a lot better. But, there are many schools that are reaches for anybody without a hook.

Have you seen anybody who was unhooked that you were comfortably able to call a "match" for Harvard? Really?

No, which is exactly my point.

Can't say much without having read your essays--which constitute a huge part of your application.

^ Yes, essays are very important. But, when chancing people, we must assume that the essays will be passable -- nothing outstanding but not hindrances.

She is a good writer.

I'm assuming this "amazingly smart friend" is you?

"UW GPA: 4.0

You're taking more? Or is she taking more?

No, she actually is my friend, haha.

If you look at the threads I have made, you can see my resume.

She went on to my account which is why she said "I'm taking more".

I don't understand why people insist on having others make chance threads for them. Making an account on College Confidential takes at most 5 minutes.

She doesn't go online much.
