Chance my friend

There are CS in Engineering and two other CS major in LAS (with Statistics or Mathematics). However, they are all pretty competitive. In general, the mid 50 ACT for engineering is 31-34 (vary with major). So ACT 29 for oos is rather weak and the 3.46 GPA is low too. I would say it is likely a reach for your friend.

I also see that UCIC looks at the rigor too, he’s taken 5 AP courses, Chemistry, Stats, English, Environmental Science, and Computer Science. As well as a multitude of honors and advanced classes. Would that help his chances?

They do look at course rigor in the sense that they are looking to determine that the applicant has tested himself by taking the most advanced classes offered at his high school. So having taken 5 APs won’t hurt, but it’s a matter of trying to put together the best class from the applicant pool. Your friend is competing to be admitted to programs with a limited number of slots as are many others. He is by no means a poor student, and, of course has a shot. Apply, and you’ll know for sure. Don’t, and you’ll always wonder.
