Thanks!

So…anyone have any thoughts?

What happened with the Questbridge schools? What’s her enthicity? To me, her best option for a top college would have been to apply to Columbia ED as a legacy. Not sure if they give the boost in the RD round, but if they do she has a reasonable shot. Her rank is low for the ivies. Engineering might help at schools like Columbia but the math score is problematic. Did she take the mathII SAT?

wow. some of the best ec’s on cc! really cool and diverse activities and awards. ivies are really hard to predict, but with your solid scores and ecs, you’re in at all of those. good luck!

hmom5 - she ended up as one of the non-matched QuestBridge finalists.

SAT IIs are most likely the weakest link in her app: MathII - 660
Chem - 680
Physics - 640

Ethnicity - she declined to ID race on her apps.

Well Questbridge should have given her a read. The ivies will be very tough with rank and scores. The last 5 on the list are probable and JHU is a match.

Was she not an athletic recruit anywhere? Was it a parent or a grandparent that attended Columbia?

Thanks for your input hmom5 - anyone else have any thoughts to share?

Harvard-Reach
Columbia (legacy)–Match, legacy should really help
MIT–Slight Reach
CalTech–Reach (yeah, I know I made it tougher than for MIT–but they focus more on the SAT II test scores than MIT does–and her score hurts her here, big time)
Princeton–Reach
Brown–Match
Penn–Match to Slight Reach (closer to Match)
Stanford–Slight Reach
Yale–Reach
Northwestern–Match (iffy, though)–could go either way (accept/reject)
Dartmouth–???–probably Match to Slight Reach, closer to Match
Johns Hopkins–Match
Michigan–Safe Match to Match
Notre Dame–Match
Rice–Match
Case-Western–Safe Match
CMU–Match

Good luck.

Harvard-Reach
Columbia (legacy)-Match, ED and Legacy
MIT- Reach
CalTech-Reach (math scores not too hot)
Princeton–Reach
Brown–slight reach
Penn–slight reach-high match
Stanford-Slight Reach
Yale-Reach
Northwestern–Match, prolly in
Dartmouth-they are iffy, relle depends of who is reviewing n mood they r in
Johns Hopkins–Match
Michigan–Safe Match
Notre Dame-Match-high match
Rice–Match
Case-Western–Safe Match
CMU–Match

hmom5 - Not really recruited beyond some of the smaller LACs and a few state schools…
Columbia legacy is a parent, who was also a 9/11 victim.

Thanks Calcruzer & afitscher! I appreciate the input, and she will too!

Anyone else?

Nitrox,

When you say a 9/11 victim, do you mean killed at either the World Trade Center or at the Pentagon or in the plane crash in Pennsylvania?–or someone who was injured in one of these incidents (including possibly being on one of the four planes involved)?

Why oh why did she not ED Columbia???

Calcruzer - 9/11 victim at WTC, thankfully not killed though.

Harvard- reach
Columbia (legacy)- high match
MIT- reach
CalTech- reach (math scores)
Princeton- reach
Brown- low reach
Penn- reach
Stanford- high reach
Yale- high reach
Northwestern- match
Dartmouth- low reach
Johns Hopkins- high match
Michigan- match
Notre Dame- high match
Rice- match
Case- IN
CMU- match

Thanks almosc90. She recently had her MIT interview, which went quite well.

hmom5 - do you think sending unsolicited materials documenting unusual national achievements would be (1) considered or (2) helpful?

BTW - on a different thread you mentioned the common data sets, which I never knew existed. What a fantastic resource! Everyone should read these!! Thanks for the info.

Anyone else have any further thoughts on her chances?

Further input is appreciated…

I could not imagine she not getting into at least half the schools on your list or so.
Good luck!

We all hope so…

Anyone else care to comment?

i find it somewhat ironic that she got into the prestigious
ross summer mathematics program, yet got only a 29 on her act math, and 640 on math II.

i think she has a good shot, though, with those ECs.

Yeah, I know. Go figure, right?
