Chance my son with average ecs/awards for engineering (CE/CS) [CA resident, 3.84 GPA (3.91/4.14/4.6 for UC), 1520 SAT, 35 ACT, <$250k total to degree]

Your stats for Purdue aren’t correct.

Undergrad enrollment: 44,170
46% instate

Purdue doesn’t break down representation by states of students but other sites have it as closer to 5% from California.

Thanks for the correction on the California percent of enrollment at Purdue. I’ve edited my post to reflect that. The larger point remains, however, that these are colleges with enormous enrollments which are heavily instate.

I double checked the total enrollment for Purdue and the number I posted is the correct enrollment as reported on Purdue’s common data set. I have no idea why there is a discrepancy between what Purdue reports on the 2 different sites or which one is correct. However, if we simply talk about round numbers somewhere between the 2 numbers reported, we can say that Purdue has about 40,000 undergrad students, which is enormous.

Agree with your general point. But these students from california see the value in going there for a few selective majors, so the numbers might still be big if half of the 5% end up in grainger or purdue fye.

Anyway the purpose of my comment was that students seem to adapt and the colleges are diverse. S25 does not have to be with only CA kids.

Admitted to CS+B at UCR. Admitted to CS at SDSU. Declining both as they were safeties.

Many kids attend safeties.

Before you decline, make sure they’re not the “right” school for you.

I’m sure you have.

My point simply is - once you are in, the classsification is not relevant. Everyone who accepted you is a safety. Everyone who didn’t is not.

A “safety” may still be a better fit for someone than a target / reach.

Safety does not necessarily mean undesirable. Actually, any college that has admitted (to major if applicable) and is affordable is now a safety.

Did you really mean to say that they are less desirable than other schools that have admitted and are affordable?

Agree with both of you that with so few in-state options we should keep and evaluate both. But …
S25 does not want to go to UCR because that is where his brother is. Even though UCR would be a good fit and has an excellent CS Department.
As for SDSU, he feels if he stays in-state then it is probably because he is not ready to go too far from home and in that case Santa Clara which is close to home would be the preferred option.

Similar event from Purdue next week in the local area.

Congratulate on UCI acceptance. Last year, there were many came off UC waitlists include S24 for UCD Engineering. Good Luck.

He has some great offers, congrats! Do you have a frontrunner so far?

We will wait out the remaining two weeks before deciding on front runners. Up the thread, we tried to shortlist 5, then within a few days a scholarship at UMD messed up the shortlist.

CS+X is part of the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, which is part of the Grainger College of Engineering at UIUC.

What is your student’s X in CS+X?

I think X = Econ. Anyway he asked the question there and he was told since the CS part is Grainger, he was invited. S25 came back from the admitted student lunch, with the impression that recruitment and career fairs are very good at Grainger.

Admitted to Computer Engineering at UCSB. Waiting for the last few left.

To gauge his thinking I asked S25 if he is excited UCSB is on the beach. He gave me a blank stare and said he was hiking near the beach last weekend and it is not a big deal. Looks like we have to visit cornfields next month before he makes a decision!

Minor Update. Waitlisted to Comp Engg at UCLA.
One more week for this to end and we can finalize a short list of 5 to visit/research and pick. Two midwest school (UIUC and Purdue) will be in the shortlist considering the fact that S25 has attended admitted student events for both in the local area. The other three I have no clue, hopefully ones he has already visited!

Unrelated question as both me and my wife are busy in april, is it ok for a 18 year old to visit schools with friends? Is there any age restriction on checking into hotels in illinois and indiana?

My S23 visited several colleges by himself… flights were no problem but hotels and rental cars both posed problems. I don’t know about those two states specifically. For hotels if it’s not strictly allowed… one thing you could try would be setting up the reservation yourself, checking in online, and having your S use the hotel’s app with a digital key…??

I think this varies by hotel group. You’d need to check each potential stay, some are 18 and some are 21. Rental cars are usually not given to under 24s I think.

Hotels will list policies on their website. Most are 21 but some are 18. It’s hotel by hotel - not by brand as they are franchised.

For example Holiday Inn express says this in Urbana: Minimum check-in age : 21

I’d call each - we found those that lost are not always accurate.

Cars will be an issue but for a big fee….

Perhaps admissions will have ideas.

Or they can shuttle or take buses and stay near campus.

You can also check if there are any youth hostels in the towns the colleges are in, if you are only finding hotels at 21+.
