So my friend is a senior, 3.9-something weighted gpa (only one b in all years of hs)
4.5-something unweighted

5 on all taken ap exams (ap govt, ap world, ap lang)

2230 on sat 780 writing 730 math 720 verb

ec’s:

-tennis for 3 years (captain this year)

unpaid engineering internship during summer before senior year

swimming for 3 years

Only piano player in our hs jazz band (pretty selective)

All state jazz band( only piano player)

all county jazz band.

He also has a small jazz combo that does plenty of gigs during the school year and makes quite a bit. (made over 4k last year, more coming this year)
also 300+ volunteer hours from doing free shows in the community.

played with professionals, ect.

Even with his dedication to music, he wants to get into an engineering program.

What are his chances for some top programs, and will his music hurt his chances?

Why would music hurt? All state jazz band is a great EC. Your SAT looks good, but try and get your math up a bit if you really want to do engineering, it will look better. (It also is very good as is though). How is your weighted GPA lower than your unweighted? Also what kind of schools are you looking at? I understand top but how top, MIT, Caltech?

He applied for quite a few schools, caltech, mit, stanford, carnegie mellon, cornell, ect.
He doesnt think he has much of a chance at getting into those, and he also applied to UMCP (university of md, college park), which has a pretty good engineering program. (instate)
also, G.ATech, V.A Tech, and RIT

My brother goes to UMD for undergrad law, but he loves it. I have visited there myself and it has a beautiful campus and the engineering building I looked in was astounding. He should get in UMD, GTech, VTech and RIT. All the super top tier schools like MIT and caltech, etc really look for a great gpa along with the sat but his is good enough that he has a chance.
