Hi~ I posted here before but I have new information to update. I’ll also show some statistics from my school regarding the number of people accepted (Class of 2015) from my school. Please chance me for:

Princeton - (2 ppl out of 30ish applicants accepted)
Carnegie Mellon - (25 out of 50 ppl accepted)
Yale (1 out of 23)
UPenn (6 out of 54)
Cornell (6 out of 47?)
University of Michigan
University of Virginia
Johns Hopkins
University of Maryland, College Park
Georgetown
Purdue
Georgia Tech

^These are the schools that I’m currently applying to.
My first and second choices are Princeton and Carnegie Mellon, respectively. I feel like I will most likely go to College Park considering the financial/familial circumstances that I’m in, but it would be great if I get into other colleges as well. :)

• SAT I : 1990 (bad I know, not very good at standardized tests …) - 710 M, 610 CR, 670 W (just took the October SAT today, anticipating a score around low 2100’s)
• SAT II: 790 Math II, 790 Physics, 770 US History, 730 Chinese with Listening (Shameful!)
• Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.98 (one B in 2nd semester of Honors English 10)
• Weighted GPA: 4.73
• Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A

• APs:
9th grade - US History (5)
10th grade - U.S. Government and Politics (5)
11th grade - BC Calculus (5), AB Calculus Subscore (5) Physics C Mechanics (5), Physics C Electricity and Magnetism (5), World History (5), Psychology (5), Studio Art Drawing (3)

• Senior Year Course Load: Multivariable Calculus/Differential Equations, AP Language and Composition, AP Biology (Double Period), AP Chemistry (Double Period), AP Human Geography

• Awards:
9th grade - Student of the Year Award for AP US History (School)
10th grade - Honorable Mention at the 54th Montgomery County Science Fair (Regional)
11th grade - AP Scholar with Distinction (National) - would’ve gotten National AP Scholar if I had gotten a 4 on my art portfolio

• Extracurriculars:
-Dance - own a dance company with my friend; been a dancer for 14 years, began private lessons at age 8, solo/lead dancer; been invited to perform at many places and events such as 2010 Shanghai World Expo, Strathmore Center, Kennedy Center, Cultural World Showcase, GWU Lisner Auditorium, Jefferson Memorial, Democratic Rally for Kathleen Towsend, etc.; dance styles that I am familiar with are ballet, Chinese folk dance, modern/contemporary, jazz, tap; been in local newspaper/TV for dance

-Art - member of National Art Honors Society, been drawing/painting (Chinese painting) since I was 9, media that I like use are chalk/oil pastels, ebony pencil, acrylic paint, charcoal, and scratchboard, got one of my artworks featured on the school hallways

-Science National Honor Society (President)

-Future Doctors of America Club (Vice-President)

-Model United Nations - participated in the 2011 Johns Hopkins Model UN Conference
-Recreational Volleyball - been doing it since 7th grade, never made school team because my short height was a major disadvantage

-Mu Alpha Theta Society

-National Honors Society

-National Art Honors Society

-Physics Club - active tutor for the club

• Job/Work Experience: Private Tutor for Algebra and Honors Geometry, Summer Intern at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab (worked on a project dealing with nanowires)
• Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital (donated 100+ hours), Physics Club tutor

I’ve written three college essays so far (2 about dance - summer experience at Beijing Dance Academy & my place in the dance community, 1 about the beach and how it relates to my personality.) My main essay for Common App will be about my grandmother’s tough love, which has shaped me to become the person that I am today.

My two main teacher recommendations are from my APUSH teacher and AP Physics teacher. Two additional recs from my Studio Art teacher and Solo Dance teacher. One counselor rec. My main teacher recs should be pretty good - I worked really hard in APUSH, to go from a low C to A in 1st quarter (and my teacher awarded me Student of the Year for APUSH). My AP Physics teacher likes me - I participate in class discussion a lot, I do relatively well on his tests (which are all very difficult), and I’m one of the only two junior girls that took AP Physics last year. My Studio Art teacher and I have a very good relationship, and we talk a lot about our personal lives and aspirations. I have known my dance teacher since I was 8 so she knows me very well and considers me as a very hardworking student. Counselor rec should be good too - she interviewed me and the talk became very personal and intriguing.

I’ll be sending art supplement forms for Visual Arts and Dance to those colleges that offer Art Forms.

Majors (that I’m thinking of): Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (1st choice), Astrophysics (2nd choice), Biology/Neuroscience (3rd choice)
Minors: Dance, Drawing, or the 2nd/3rd choices of my majors

Side Notes: Not taking ACT. Not good at ACT, my SAT score looks much better even though it sucks as well.

Bump~~~~~~

I think those essays, if they really come out great, and the Arts EC’s (Supplement Forms)
go really well you have a good chance at all of them.

Chance Back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1218452-am-i-even-close.html

Which school at CMU?

Engineering school is my first choice for CMU. Second/Third choices would be Fine Arts/Music Theatre.

Bump~~~~~~~~~~

Bump~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

No responses? :O

where in MD, all schools except for the ivies should be no problem with good essays

Not sure about the ivies… but others look good!

The glaring problem is SAT. That will make chances anywhere including Princeton, Yale, UPenn, Cornell, JHU and Georgetown pretty bad. CMU and UVA are iffy also (with current SAT). Purdue and GT are the only solid acceptances. Hopefully you get the higher score because your ECs are otherwise excellent.

female in engineering= better chance

Thanks for replies! I might retake the SATs in December if I don’t have significant improvement. My issue with SATs is endurance and confidence which is why I don’t score well … -.-

Bump~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ahh your essays sound like mine  dance and the beach are two of my passions.

I think your extracurriculars and ap scores are awesome, and should definitely help. your dance experiences are stellar and I think the arts supplements will add a lot to your application. work on the test scores :stuck_out_tongue: you can do it, you did great on the ap tests!
