chance please: JHU, NU, UCLA?

Female, midwest
Junior at elite HS- independent, tiny, well-known for intelligent, super competitive student body (the woman who gave us the tour at CalTech knew the staff intimately)- no tuition, entrance exam, attached to a college campus

SAT I (Dec. 6 one): 740 CR, 750 Math, 790 Writing
only took once, math is a little low but overall I’m pretty happy and Level two will fix
plan to take and score well on Math Level II and Chem subject tests

all honors or AP classes, currently in Calc, Chem, Physics, USH, Latin IV, English
took AP Psych last year, 5 on exam
straight-A student (no GPA or ranking system at school)

multiple national latin exam awards, all silver or gold
NMSQT semifinalist; plan to apply for finalist, scholarship (PSAT 228)
multiple local math contest awards

ECs: i started my own club last year that fights all types of discrimination, single-handedly organized sales, events, and hosted guest speakers
mentor for minority middle schoolers looking to apply to my HS (must take SSAT; we tutor to improve score)
teach class every year during week of student-taught classes (e.g. psychology, D-Day, WWII classes)

College ambitions: pre-med, possible minor in holocaust studies (that would be awesome but probably kill me)
Plan to go on to med school, etc.

essays will tie in my science interests with my efforts to solve social problems.

Top choices are Northwestern U, Johns Hopkins U, and UCLA (my psych course was online from JHU through CTY, and my freshman year I scored 32 on Northwestern Talent Search ACT)
UCLA I picked because one of the top med schools, but the 40,000 student body is a little intimidating

I wanted Stanford originally but it seems way out of my reach.
Also interested in Rice, Berkeley, Duke
will visit NU soon, might go ED on that one if I’m in love

considering your GPA and SAT can’t really be much better, the only question is whether your ECs and essays and stuff are up to par.

if i were you, id apply to stanford if you really like it. there are people with much lower stats that apply. your chances aren’t that bad. in the mean time, keep getting good grades and become active in the niche that you like. doing so could make you unique and give you valuable stuff to say come application time.

You are certainly well qualified for all of your schools, but much will depend upon your teacher recs & application essays. It is very easy to double major & minor at Northwestern University. Apply to Stanford if that is a school of interest as you are as well qualified academically as the typical Stanford student. Use your ED choice wisely.

thanks for the advice. i plan to start thinking about essays in the summer, that way I’m not scrambling come fall.
i am SO excited for college.

i recommend applying early to stanford… just work on your sat II scores and try to maximize your scores there and they can make your stats look even better. stanford is a reach for anyone, no matter the stats, but you will easily be in the middle percentile of their numbers.

as far as northwestern, johns hopkins and ucla… all are fantastic schools, and they should all be matches for you.

good luck!

UCLA is a beautiful and a great school. its my top pick but u would definetly have a great chance to get in. the student body is very large but u’d hardly notice it. i just visited it last Sunday.
