Hi All. I am a current senior at a suburban high school in Houston, TX. What do you guys think of my chances to UT PGE and Engineering Honors?. Anyways, sorry about the chatter. Here are those cold, hard stats

Teacher recommendation: NONE FROM TEACHERS…someone said you don’t need them…but I heard it’s recommended that you get one will this hurt me? I got one from TAMU prof and a grad student…they wrote pretty good ones a page long…is that good enough?
Alumni Recommendation: TAMU professor that I worked with; He is on the news a lot and known in the engineering industry

You’re pretty much in for your major, but you’re a high match/low reach for the honors program. It’s not a huge deal though. The only thing that the honors program entails is a scholarship and enrollment in a few classes.

Thanks DTX! By the way, just wondering if you know, what is your opinion on the viability of petroleum engineering in the future? Is it a good major to follow into after the oversaturation deal going on these days? Thanks again for your response!

Don’t let the Media manipulate you… Petroleum Engineering is the best thing you can do if you love engineering and are open to new challenges and out-of-the box solutions. The only oversaturation that can occur is when oil prices fall down and jobs become limited. If the oil prices remain where they are or they become higher, hundreds of new jobs will open up.

Source: the PETE engineers in my dad’s office probably making over 200 grand

Thanks SD1996! It’s just that I keep hearing from current students at TAMU and Tech that they are not receiving internships and the situation is only going to get worse for our generation…I am just worried about job opportunities in the energy industry for 2018, but I hope that UT will take care of me ;)…Thanks once again!

I have access to some confidential things and all I can say is that the outlook is really good if you are willing to work hard and more and more projects are under way. By the way, I have also applied to UT for PETE but it is a reach for me. You should also apply to other schools as well. I have been accepted to LSU but I would love to try my luck out at Texas A and M or UT. :D

Thanks again SD1996! While your statement is true, there are many others on this forum complaining of not getting internships in the field and limiting hires from independents such as Apache, Chevron, etc…therefore causing extreme competition for not so coveted positions such as 60k field engineer job…That’s my only concern since I don’t want extreme competiton for a job as I am not a U.S. Citizen yet :)…Thanks once again!

Nor am I. We are both on the same side. I can say three things. Number 1: Work hard in college and get a high gpa (they look at your gpa and my source are the people who hire) and Number 2: Try to get as many connections as possible. Number 3: Don’t worry about such things yet. Your main objective is to enjoy life and have fun and You are going to regret everything if you are not having fun :)

Hi all! I just wanted to say that I was declined admission to UT PGE…really heartbroken as I truly wanted to go to this program…However, although admissions said that residency was barely a factor, I was evaluated as OOS for some reason…would that have made a difference? I have filed an appeal and all…I’ve also sent the department head at UT PGE an email but no response as of now…Funny thing is, the top kids at my school, and we’re talking top 10/summa cum laude, were all mostly rejected from UT engineering while kids a lot lower in rank and SAT score were getting accepted…and these kids have good ECS too! What’s more, our class had the highest GPA cutoff in almost two decades! So basically we were the most competitive class yet we weren’t receiving the admissions Idk what’s going on guys…any help/input is appreciated! So, assuming that I’ll still be denied admission, do you think it’s viable to go to A&M for PetE considering the new policy change in which you have to re-apply for your specific major in your third semester since you’re only admitted into general engineering? To be honest, I just feel like that’s a big risk to take…UT did give me Computer Science as OOS, even though I’m instate. Anyways, let me know what you guys think! UT Compsci or A&M PetE? And, I am actually interested in both fields so interest isn’t too big of a factor …Thanks guys for your help! :D

Also just an update to my profile since I just noticed this haha…I did get teacher recs …however they were both from science teachers, AP Physics and AP Chem

@frugalengineer - More important than deciding between UT and A & M, is getting your Instate vs OOS status straightened out. Did A & M accept you as an instate or oos student?

Yes, I do believe if UT considers you OOS that it could have factored into your denial of your first choice major.

Seems like you have an “in” at TAMU since you interned there. If costs are relatively the same, and you can see yourself in either major, the only real thing to consider is where you fit in. The cultures of those two schools are very different. You have obviously spent time on TAMU campus and it is not far from Houston. It is not really a dilemma as much as a decision. Go visit UT over night as a accepted student if you haven’t spent any time there. Hopefully, you have housing deposits already down at both, so you can take your time until May 1 to decide.

Thanks for your input lots2do! I truly appreciate it …and to be honest, I’ve been wanting to do PetE before it made the news for its salaries …I’ve always been interested in working in drilling and completions and hopefully traveling the world one day while I’m working as a PetE…However, do you think it’s worth the risk at TAMU since their new engineering policy change in which you are admitted in general engineering and have to reapply for your major third semester? If I was admitted into PetE, I’d take TAMU in a heartbeat…but I’m just hesitant about their new policy since they don’t have any defined GPA or other things for getting into specific departments since it is a new policy…Thus, I feel like I’m going in blindfolded and I’m scared that with the current competition for PetE, I might not get it …Please let me know what you guys think! Thank you once again! :D

I imagine the change at TAMU may be a good thing for serious students. Their new policy will weed out those students who come to college to party and don’t pay attention to their core classes and gpa. Those students accepted to engineering that take their studies seriously and meet the deadlines and requirements to get into PetE should find themselves successful. Not really sure how most 18 year old kids can possibly decide among the array of different engineering majors coming out of high school anyway. You are probably one of few that has interned in a specific engineering field. And I wonder it that experience helped you decide against Chemical Engineering and why?

Hi lots2do! Thanks again for your response! To answer your question-I actually enjoy chemical engineering! However, it’s just that I really wish to work in the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry as I am more interested in exploration and production rather than refinery and processing. However, that’s not to say that r&e is boring! It’s just that I think I’ll enjoy the actual “hunt” for oil more … So do you think I should go for TAMU then lots2do? They do have an amazing PetE department…I just hope that I am able to compete amongst the plethora who will also want PetE …thanks again for your response! :D

To add to the previous comment-My main issue is that should I go for the already secured position in UT CompSci, an amazing department ranked in top 10 for an amazing field…or…should I go for what I really wanted but entail the risk of not getting in at TAMU’s PetE department? If anybody could elaborate on the pros and cons for both my issue and these two fields, I would be extremely grateful! Thank you! :)
