I know you’ve been told otherwise, and I believed it too in high school, but at least at MIT, they aren’t likely to care about most of your “leadership” unless you did something interesting with that position.

Your stats are good enough - your SAT-CR score is a bit low, and if you can bring it up that would be nice, but it’s unlikely to sink you by itself. I don’t know what classes your school offers so I can’t see if you’ve challenged yourself to the extent possible. I think your fencing is good, and your pageantry stuff is interesting, but most of MIT admissions is unlikely to know much about how pageants work, so you may need to explain it a bit. I like all your miscellaneous stuff, and it’ll probably all count in your favor but not give you a huge edge. Your orchestra stuff is good.

I’m getting increasingly cynical about all the CC posters who have a zillion hours of volunteering in a hospital. Is that supposed to be the big ticket to brand-name colleges these days? Anyway, you were captain, which probably at least indicates that you actually care and weren’t just doing it to pad your resume. Assuming that “captain” comes with significant responsibilities and not just a title. You seem to care about the world, which is good in the sense that these days MIT wants people who can understand not just science and technology but their roles in society.

Remember that EA is pretty competitive, and that even if you get deferred EA you can still get in RA. Many people do.

hmm… something interesting… well, as student council president i helped organize the construction of a new school entrance for both my high school and a middle school that is beside it. and i won sci olympiad awards local, regional, and state in particularly entomology and ecology, and i’m ranked nationally for spanish.

thanks for the advice!

sorry, you’re not going to make it

Actually, I think you’d be surprised – there were two girls on the cheerleading squad with me whose major ECs in high school included pageants, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a handful more in the student body currently.

You sound like a great applicant to me. Of course, these days especially, no one can say for sure what chance any one applicant has. So…good luck!

Ms. Isabell,
I won’t comment on your stats (because you know your application is very competitive for RA, but EA is difficult for everybody). But, I want to wish you the best of luck, we are keeping our fingers crossed for you and wish you the best.

You are also ED to UPENN, if you get it - you will have made a commitment to attend UPENN over MIT. Isn’t UPENN binding?

Since you will be the frosh, we will have to show you and your parents were to eat in Chinatown, when they bring you for orientation.

Again - best of luck.

Also, remember that MIT’s acceptance rate doesn’t change from EA to RD, so the benefits you’re trying to reap by applying EA really don’t pay off with MIT.

also… i’m a prospective recruit for fencing… will recruiting help a bit?

go engineers!

Whoa, crazy!!! What is up with all the fencers? Really, this is just ridiculous. I have only been on this website for 3 days, and I have already met two other fencers. This blows me away because there are very few fencers in my area and its such an…unknown sport…(Florida is sad, really)

I too applied to MIT EA with fencing recruitment. Hopefully it helps out a lot in admissions! Interesting to meet somebody who I may be hypothetically on a team with next year.

I was just wondering what your fencing rankings were, if you have any. Is fencing in Georgia competitive? I live in NJ and it seems that everyone in the state knows at least one person who fences…

I’m still trying to decide whether to apply to MIT or not…

A07. (is that question for fencers in general? If it was directed to the topic maker only, my apologies!)

Yeah, New Jersey is full of fencers. I had never even dreamed of a high school fencing team, and so I was shocked when I heard that they were common in some places.

Dude. you people are insane. For the record, I’m a freshman at MIT and a Brain and Cognitive Sciences major…your stats are a lot better than mine! just believe in yourself :)

Believe in yourself? Really?

Actuallly I am very impressed that you are both a state champ fencer and in all-state orchestra, the highest honor a hs musician can achieve. The fact that you have maintained your grades with this level of excellence in ECs just means to me that they would be nuts to turn you down, but what do I know? Good luck.

does all-state orchestra stand out?
(especially if ur asian)

lol, ehhh not really, but i think it helps to show that you go beyond the classroom. :)

thanks for the feedback
