Chance

Son finally finished taking all his standardized tests. Here are his stats:

Biggest concern is a 25% Class rank.

It is low due to weak freshman grades after transferring from an academically weak middle school, in a predominantly Hispanic, poor neighborhood. Also, because school has a policy that effectively adds an additional 10-15% class rank penalty, for attending low performing middle schools. I am guessing they feel the chance of success in college is lower for kids who attend such elementary and middle schools. Also, perhaps because it helps kids who attend the local elementary and middle schools get unobstructed admission under the top 10% law in TX. So, here are his stats:

Otherwise, graduating with:
12 AP courses
11 Honors courses
National Merit Semifinalist. (Finalist hopeful)
National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.

PSAT/ NMSQT Performance:
760 PSAT Writing.
740 PSAT Critical Reading.
690 PSAT Math.
SAT score: Higher than PSAT in all 3 sections.

SAT Subject Test Performance:
750 Math II
750 Biology

5 AP courses in Junior Year, with following scores:
5 AP Biology
5 AP US History
5 AP English Lang
5 AP Computer Science II (predicted by class grades/ No CB test offered)
4 AP Chemistry

5 AP courses in Senior Year:
AP Physics
AP Calculus BC
AP English Literature
AP Government
AP Economics.

Extracurriculars include

HS Chess Champion.

President of the High School Chess Club.

Participates at the National level in his sport.

Member of an off campus Philosophy Club.

Math tutor to middle school kids in economically disadvantaged neighborhood.

Spent significant time on remedial education, improving academic skills, resulting in above and a change of 4 standard deviations on the SAT/ PSAT, compared to 7th grade SAT (in Duke TIP).

Harvard does not consider class rank. You should read this thread before asking any more questions on your son’s behalf: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/1420290-chance-threads-please-read-before-posting-one.html
