Essays:

One of my essays was awful and sounded like every other word was derived from a thesaurus. I wrote the essay in the middle of my Militant/Richard Dawkins Atheist phase, and I pretty much indirectly insulted Christianity and said that theology doesn’t deserve to be a subject of study. Not my shining moment.

Other essay was above average.

Hardship Essay Content (as I tongue-in-cheek refer to as my “hook”):

I have been sick since 7th grade. This sickness was bad enough that I was forced to drop out of my Private Christian School during my 10th grade year. Fatigue, headaches, brain-fog, loss of weight (went from 115 to 85 pounds in a couple of months at one point), impaired growth, recurrent sicknesses due to my impaired immune system were some of what I was dealing with. I recently was diagnosed, started treatment, and am currently improving.

Will chance back if you wish.

Well, there goes my ‘in-state homeschooler’ spot.

You have a great chance of getting in, the essay may hurt you a bit but your scores and gpa are great.

I don’t think the subject matter of the essay will hurt you, though if it was terrible writing it might. I am sure others chose essay topics that are just as controversial, and it may even come as a relief to some on admissions to get another point of view.

You do not know how much sleep I have lost due to that one essay.

Do you think that my race being white male will help me? That is going to annoy me, I wish I could edit the post.

why would your white race help you? that makes no sense. you think they admit people because they are white? no because every single white person that goes to unc is qualified. white people are already the majority of the population, if anything they are seeking more minorites in order to diversify the school atmosphere. i cant believe you think that being white will help you get in. shame. i really do not mean to write this post with hostility, but comments like that really makes me upset. As a white female myself, i would never think that being white will get me into an institution. i mean c’mon we are in the 21st century. the reason why minorities have somewhat of an advantage is because not a lot of minorites even qualify , or take advantage of the countrys best schools. so to answer your question, no being white WILL NOT help you out in the admissons process., as a matter of fact, i know some hispanic and black students that have better scores than what you just posted and probably better essays. so if you were against a black candidate with better scores, what do you think the admissions will say,uhh let me guess, “lets choose him because he is white”<— how does that sound to you?

I said that my race was “white male” in my first post. My race is white; my gender is male. Sarcasm is tricky business on the internet.

what? you just asked if being white will give you an advantage

My reasoning behind making that post:

This is a chance thread.
I figured that a post such as “would blah blah blah help me get accepted?” would be common in such a thread.
I realized that I said that my race is “white MALE,” which is not my race but my race and gender.
I attempted to be funny and sarcastically asked if my RACE being “white MALE” would help me get accepted.

It was a failed joke, SORRY.

LOL at this :D

Yeah, that’s not funny.
I have similar stats and am also not pleased with one of my essays. It’s not controversial, it was just written in a hurry…

I think you have a good chance.

you SAT score, ACT score, and legacy is all Carolina needs to accept you

i say 99.9%

^ Except that legacy counts for nothing instate. Do I think he will get in, yes, but do I think his legacy status will have any impact on the decision, no.

i had a friend who went to UNC. He had 1750 SAT score, captain of the soccer team, and his dad went to UNC.

others were average.

oh and he doesn’t play for UNC’s soccer team.

Half the state is a UNC legacy in some way or another, and because of this admissions has said that they do not consider legacy as a factor for instate student. For out of state students it does give a boost, but this is because there are not nearly the same number of legacies who apply oss.
