I know my gpa is horrible, but what are my chances at these colleges
GPA:2.86 w, 2.79 uw
SAT: 2080 (670 w, 750 m, 690 cr)
SAT2:690 biology e; taking math 2 in December
200+ hrs of community service, I worked for a local nature restoration center and was a leader of a nature camp for kids
AP tests: 4 on biology, 3 on environmental science

I live in California

colleges I’m applying to:
Purdue (environmental engineering)
USC (environmental engineering)
UIUC (mechanical engineering)
Georgia tech(environmental engineering)
UT austin (environmental engineering)
NYU(environmental engineering)
Texas a&m (idk yet)
san jose state (mech engineering)
Cal poly SLO (mech engineering)
Santa Clara university (mech engineering)

I don’t know about Cal Polu SLO, SCU, SJSU,
but all the others are HIGH reaches. Your GPA is way-too low…also the fact that your SAT isn’t bad while your gpa is really bad will give an impression to admission offices that you are a slacker in school, whether you really are or not.

Raise your GPA to at least 3.0 …what’s your home state?

EI for CSU’s is around 3728. You are below the EI threshold for ME at SJSU (see link below). You may get in but only as Undeclared unless you give an alternate major.

Your competitive SAT will not overcome your low GPA for the California schools

SLO/UCS: High Reach
SCU: Reach
SJSU: Low Reach
Rest of the schools:???
You need to have some backups or you may risk the chance for a shut out.

@Gumbymom i searched up el for sjsu for mech engineering on the link you gave me, and the minimum is 3850, whereas my ei is 4386, should i be fine?

I used your weighted (GPA of 2.86 x800) + (SAT math of 750 + SAT cr of 690) and I get 3728. How are you doing the calculation? If your EI is 4386, then your CSU/UC GPA is 3.68, so did you post the wrong GPA?

@ajay351: Most privates that you would have a chance, would not have the Mechanical or Environmental Engineering majors. California Baptist has the major, I do not know about costs?? You will not be eligible for merit aid with your GPA, so if they generous, it may be doable.
Some Cal States to consider are CSU Northridge, Fresno and Sac State.
Going to CC for 2 years is not a bad idea. You can use TAG for the UC’s and transfer into UCR/UCM/UCI/UCD or transfer to one of the Cal States if you maintain a good GPA. CC’s will let you wipe the slate clean and start all over. The best thing you can do is check the common datasets for each school you are interested in applying to see what percentage of applicants with your GPA were accepted.

See link for Sac State on page 10. They accepted 29% applicants with your GPA range. Just remember, Engineering majors are competitive so this by no means a guarantee.

@gumbymom, thank you very much, and financial aid is not that much of an issue for me, but do you think it is even worth trying to apply for some of the colleges i have listed?

I would keep SSJU on your list. The other schools are Reaches, so if you want to spend the money on applications, I would pick no more than 2 to apply. I am only slightly familar with the OOS schools, so I can not give you any direction on which ones to choose.
