Hey!

So I was considering Film and Television at NYU. NYU is a top choice for me, I have family in NY and it’s where my mom went to school. However, I’m currently in Ireland. So let me tell you what I can about my education and please tell me if I’ll have a chance of getting in.

OK so in Ireland we have two state or national exams. We have the Junior Cert. (which I took at 14) and the Leaving Cert. which I will take at 17. The Leaving Cert. is your equivalent to the SATs, except there are only subject tests.

In my Junior Cert. I only got 3 A’s (German, Science, Political Ed.), 6 B’s and 1 C (geography). Not the best, I know. I probably could have done better to be honest but I let my ECs got in the way a little.

For my Leaving Cert. I’ll be taking 8 subjects which are:
English (compulsory)
Irish (compulsory)
Math (compulsory)
German
Physics
Biology
Art + Art History
History (Irish and general world history)

All of these subjects are what we call Higher Level or Honours, by the way. I will never allow myself to drop down to Ordinary Level.

I took the PSAT earlier this year to try and get into Ireland’s only G&T program at age 15:
Reading: 710
Math: 520 (awful, right? I’ll be improving on this)
Writing: 550 (I’ll improve on this too).

Overall I do well in school and get mostly A’s and B’s, with the occasional C in math.

My ECs:
Chairperson of the school’s Debating Society (3 years + 1 so far as Chairperson)
Co-Captain of the Quiz Team (4 years so far)
Member of the school’s Amnesty Int. group (2 years so far)
Member of the Cork City Youth Youncil (2 years so far)
Representative of Cork City in the National Youth Council (2010-2011)

I also have other things which might work in my favour: I play piano, I took a computer programming course at the local university, I took a Film Studies course at a national university for 3 weeks during the summer, I speak beginner Chinese and came 3rd in an Ireland-China bridge competition, I’m a member of a writing group and I have work experience at The Irish Examiner (one of Ireland’s dominating newspapers) and at RT
