Looking at HYP, MIT, Penn, Brown, Cornell, WUSTL, Northwestern, ND
Will my 700 verbal kill me at the competitive schools, or will the ACT be fine? Should I retake? Realistic at most of these schools? Any others I should consider? I am starting apps and essays and it is sort of wiggin me out. Thanx in advance for any input.

What, no feedback?

Again, you seem to be in very good shape. Nice EC’s, Good Grades, scores are generally high, though yeah, the 700 might affect.

Get the essay to kick ass. That’s what I say. Get the essay to speak about you as a person, your goals, dreams, hopes, or hell, make a funny story about shooting each other with waterguns at camp (I did that)

Whatever you do, be unique and be you. Writing skills notwithstanding.

Good luck

You should probably be a good shot for WUSTL, Northwestern and ND. The HYP is always a crapshoot.

Bumpbumpbump

I must say you have a reasonable chance to gain admission into Yale. Great ECs and awards will fill in the void left by your SAT score, so don’t worry about the 700. Great SAT II scores, actually awesome SAT II scores. Also, my friend presented at AJAS in St. Louis this year and gained admissions into MIT with a 2100 SAT, I heard AJAS opens a lot of doors for colleges. Also, I’m the PA male delegate aren’t you pumped? Yale is hard to get into as is, but if you write an amazing essay, it would be hard to reject you. (however, waitlist is always a possibility)

Will SCEA help my cause at all? or will this app get diluted by all the other qualified applicants applying early?

There is always a benefit to applying early. If Yale’s where you want to go, apply early. Apply to your top choice SCEA/ED. That’s always the smart thing to do.

huge benefit. you compete against a significantly smaller pool of applicants, and so long as you’re not outright rejected, you get a second “bite at the apple” in the regular round, where your early manifestation of interest only helps you in the adcom’s eyes.

I’m in a similar situation as the OP in terms of SAT score imbalance. Is there a huge difference between a 690 and 700 CR? My math and writing are both over 700, but i was wondering if you guys think i should retake b/c of my 690 CR? Id say it’s good enough, but I want to make sure a sub-700 score wouldnt get a sour look. The composite is 2160, btw (760M, 710W). Thanks!

If you know you can do better, it can’t hurt. On the old scale, it’s just a 1450, which is high compared to most people, but average compared to other Yale applicants.

“Perfect Score National Latin Exam (only 227 out of 34,233 awarded)
3 Consecutive Gold Medals/ Summa Cum Laude on National Latin Exam (Highest level)”

Should make next year interesting… my son (one of the other 227 also with 3 consecutive Gold Medals in the NLE), is also applying SCEA. Hope there’s room for both!

bump it up
