Background/family:
I am a first generation student neither of parents have been to college. My father hasn’t even earned is high school diploma. I am African American and Mexican. My families annual income is $20,000-$30,000 for a house of six. Only my mother works. I am home schooled. I want to major in criminology and education with a minor in spanish. I want to become a federal agent with the FBI or maybe a teacher.

I think it depends on what a “good school” is. Your background is definitely something you could write about for your personal statements, but your grades (especially the C’s) hurt your chances overall.

Like a top public university

haha I think it also depends on what state you’re in. I live in CA, so “top public uni” means UCB or UCLA, which are reaches for everyone really. I think your chances for UCB and UCLA are really low though, because of your grades unfortunately…

It’ll definitely be hard, and it also depends on your test scores a lot as well. If you have high test scores, your chances are much better (as in, over 2100 SAT and 33 ACT <-- UC’s)

Also, you should check out some private universities, because they give much much more financial aid (like… Stanford gives 100% scholarship to anyone who has family income like yours)

What state are you in? Are you doing a traditional homeschool or are you with a virtual or charter?

Also are you registered to take your SATs or ACTs? Any SAT 2s? If you have not looked into testing you need to do it ASAP.

I don’t know about other states but our top schools (CA) require a class in the visual/performing arts. You will need to make sure you have fulfilled the correct courses for your potential schools.

Im in Florida and I am taking a virtual homeschool. I am registered to take the ACT and two subject tests (Spanish and Math 1)

I took my performing arts/visual back when I was attending a brick and mortar school.

As an OOS applicant, you will receive little to no FA from any California publics. Expect to pay anywhere from $35K to $55K per year for the UC’s and Cal states. Ethnicity is not considered in admissions for the California publics. Look at California privates and in-state options if FA is needed

Visual and performing arts requirements depend on the college requirements, but I don’t see any on your list of high school classes. Did you take them as a high school or middle school student?

My school said that journalism is a performing arts

Do you have SAT or ACT scores? I’m assuming you need FA, do you have a list of schools you are considering? When I think of top public universities, I think of UCB and UMich, which would both be reaches for you. Are you applying to Florida or Florida State?

@Soccerchic24: I would check with each school you plan to apply, if Journalism is a VPA. At my son’s HS, Journalism is considered a college prep elective. Each school may have different interpretation of what is a Visual/Performing arts course.

Yep beware. In CA Journalism is specifically not a performing/Visual art according to the University of California. It is an college prep elective. If something satisfies your school grad requirements, it does not mean that it satisfies your college entrance requirements. You would not be able to apply to the UC system at this time because you are missing your VPA requirement.

So what’s the general performing/visual art courses?

Visual/performing art courses: Drama, Orchestra/Band, Ceramics, Studio Art, Art, Graphic Design, Painting etc…

Oh okay.
