Chances at a UC school for top 50% student

What are my chances at ANY UC school for me, whose 10th-12th GPA is just outside the top 25% of the class (3.1 UW-123/478) My Princeton Review book of colleges says at all the students at the UCs were in at least the top 25% of their class.

However:
My 9th-12th GPA (3.25 UW) is within the top 25%.
I’m still a junior, so I have a semester to improve.

Thanks for any help!

Your college counselor at you high school might be able to give you an idea of what students with your stats were able to do this year…that would be the best indicator, I can think of.

The UC system is particularly fickle in the way they pick and chose their students…you might look at the individual campus web sites to see if they have a rubric or scoring system.

SoCalkid8807:

UCB/UCLA: Super Reach
UCSD: Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Slight Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match

what is your weighted??

and don’t worry about rank, UC’s don’t care about that.

they basically weight your Ap classes, plug it into a calculator, and you’re in or not…its quite simple actually.

flopsy would be right if those were WEIGHTED, but they’re not.

if you have about 3.5 W then UCSD would be slight reach and anything below that would be a match [depending on your SAT scores]

Here are the rest of my stats for more information:

My 9th-12th rank is 108/478-within the top 25%
My HS doesn’t weigh GPAs for honors/AP.

Sports: None
Clubs: Key Club, Spanish Club, Crackdown

ok so UCSD would be a reach, and UCLA and UCB would be a big big reach.

UCSB UCB UCI would be lesser reaches, but reaches nonetheless [slight]

UCSC UCR UCM would be matches [assuming you get that SAT score]

“if you have about 3.5 W then UCSD would be slight reach and anything below that would be a match [depending on your SAT scores]”

-What on earth? a 3.5 weighted gpa is not a slight reach into ucsd, it would be a reach or large reach. ucsd’s average gpa is above a 4.0. Furthermore, a 3.5 would deff not be a match into irvine, sb, or davis. Those schools average gpa’s are in the 3.8’s-3.9’s, it would make them a slight reach at best. he would have to have stellar sat’s to change this.

You might want to start checking out brochures to UCR.

909

yeah uc riverside and santa cruz.
uc merced accepts almost everyone.

You’ll probably need some good EC’s and test scores for anything above Riverside, Merced, and Santa Cruz. Riverside average- 3.60

I checked last night…UCR average is 3.45

But I think it was LAST years princeton review book…so its probably up a bit

uh UCCHRIS:

I think he has a decent shot at Davis and UCSB with a 3.5ish weighted…more of a high match/lower reach

ok, I doubt he has 8 semesters of UC ap credit, he can easily take 1-3 AP classes this summer and get a 3.8 W

and yeah, 3.9 W is the UCSD average

above that, this year was really random since its the first year of using the NEW SAT, so UCLA ended up admitting a buch of 1950’s and 4.0W

so you never know

i would disagree wih you thebrown, ucsb’s average admit had significantly higher gpa than the poster. ucsb’s average admit was a 3.88 gpa and a 1236 old sat (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsb.html). the posters has a 3.5 weighted gpa, which makes his chances a slight reach or reach. but you are correct in that you never know with uc admissions, as admissions to some uc’s are random. the average admit to ucsd was a 4.01, and a 1306 old sat (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsd.html). ucsd is deffiantly a reach or likely a large reach for the poster. uc’s also usually way gpa more important than sat, but if the poster scores well on his sat’s then his chances will go up, especially for santa barbara.

I got my two other SAT II scores back.

Biology E-580
US History-670

UC has a very defined system. The UCs are for the top 12%, CSUs for the next down and than CCs. However, it’s really easy to get into a UC after 2 years at a CC.

top 12% or top 12. As in the cut off is for the guy rank 12th in his class or may be some guy rank 23 out of something which divide out and equal 12 percent?

socalkid, how about some cal state? They are not that bad.

My Second Semester Grades

AP Biology-B
AP US History-A
Advanced Art P-A
Composition & Literature III P-A
Trigonometry & Pre-Calculus P-C
Spanish III P-B

My SAT scores
Critical Reading-590
Math-490
Writing-610
