Chances At Cal Poly or UC Irvine

Hey all. I think my first choice would definitely be Cal Poly in doing something with computers or engineering. And if possible, Irvine.

10th:
World Lit: B / B
World History: A / B
Algebra 2: A / A
Wt. Training: B / A
Chemistry H: D / C
Chinese 3: B / B
Chamber Orchestra: A / A

11th:
(2nd set of grades are prospective)
Amer Lit/Writ H: D / C
US History 1: A / A
Comp Prog JAVA: B / A
Math Analysis: A / A
Physics: B / B
Chamber Orchestra: A / A

Academic GPA (10-12): 3.167

-I will be retaking Amer Lit/Writ over the summer; I will be getting a definite A.
-Will my 2 D’s cause me be automatically rejected?
-2nd semester Jr. year: should be getting 3.5 or higher
-Senior year classes worth noting: Calc AB, C++

SATs (prospective)
SAT1: ~2000
MathII: currently 680, aiming for 750+
Physics: ~500, aiming for 700+

ECs:
-Certificate of Merit: Level 9
-couple hundred hours of community service (will have to check with my current volunteer organization)
-violin for 8 years, drums for 2, guitar for 1
-club officer
-currently voluntarily tutoring middler schoolers at violin

What of the lower tier UC’s would be within my reach?
Is Cal Poly or UCI realistic?

Thanks in advance. Chancing me is much appreciated. :)

Anyone? I forgot to add to my ECs that I am a member of the Music Honor Society.

Hmm, slight reach to reach, for both.

You would get into Merced for sure, probably Riverside and have a shot at UCSC. Caly Poly is a big reach. Though I think you need to get rid of all Ds.

I’d say Cal Poly and UCI are definitely reaches for you. The two D’s and low GPA will really hurt you.

Do I have any hope for these schools? Or should I just be focusing on somewhere lower tier? By the way, thanks guys for the replies.

You’ve got a chance at getting into those schools, but with your grades it might be difficult. Getting a 2000+ on the SAT will help, but I’m not sure if it will be enough. My advice is to volunteer more, maybe get a job or internship, or something like that. You’ll need some more EC’s to put down on your app.

Other schools to consider in California could be UC Riverside, UC Merced, UC Santa Cruz, Cal Poly Pomona, San Diego State, and Sonoma State.
