Chances at Cal Poly?

After realizing how off course I’ve gone in High School, I’m wondering whether or not I should even bother applying to a school as a freshman and just taking some remedial classes at City College. I know that Cal Poly is not the easiest school to get into (one would argue that such a school does not exist, besides those that have open admissions), but I have some confidence in being accepted there in my current situation. Please, reaffirm my belief that I can go to college!

Also, if you have any other suggestions, please post them!

NOTABLE EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:

 • Involved in the theatre arts since 6 (member of the school’s award-winning improvisational comedy team)
 • Plays guitar (just for a hobby)
 • Writes voluntarily and occaisionally for an online publication Inside Mac Games (editorials, reviews, news posts)
 • Member of the Chinese Culture Club (I’m not Chinese, though)
 • Member of the Liberty Club
 • Member of JSA
 • Around a 130-140 hours spent summer of sophomore year interning at a theatre camp
 • Currently holding a job working 10-20 hours a week at a movie theatre.
 • Experience in the digital arts (took numerous classes at UCSB Extension program)
 • 2 years enrolled at a course in Animation (not currently pursuing)
 • 1 year of Aikido (not currently pursuing)

(As you can probably tell, my extracurriculars fall extremely short and I’m in desperate need of something to enrich my boring suburban life.)

With that said, can I get a show at hands for a possibility at Cal? (…poly)

looks like you into performing arts very much. Such deep involvement is a big plus in the college apps in you create a focus of it. But you have no leadership roles in organization, that shows as a minus.
Still, It seems like you are in a good position to get into Cal Poly if you can get 1900-2100 on the SATs and do a decent job on the essays.

NOTE FROM THE ORIGINAL POSTER:

I intend to receive AT LEAST a 2000 on the SAT retake, as all practice tests have revealed. I do not know what happened on the actual test day, but I assume I can break the 2000 mark by June.

u look like u have a good chance. my friends got in with less that your GPA and lower test scores and not nearly as much ecs. i think you would have a good chance at mid range ucs as well

really good chance, but where are your AP scores?

The only AP test I took was World History, which I received a 4 on.

I should also mention that I qualify for CSF and NHS, and I will be taking AP Tests in Euro/US History and Physics, and SATIIs in US History, Physics, and Lit.

I just got back from my college counselor… she says that I definitely have a chance at UCSB, UCD and UCSD as well, and possibly Berkley and LA.

If you threw a few sports into your ECs, you’d be pretty well rounded.
