chances at duke

duke is one of my top choices, so i was wondering wat anybody thought about my chances of getting in

yound pretty solid. good job. just remember that if duke is,in fact, your #1, apply ED

bump…

Yeah I’d say you’re probably in. Any awards to speak of?

well don’t jump to conclusions…there’s no way you’re “probably in”. nobody is. duke doesn’t even accept all of those who are #1 in the class and got a perfect SAT. the facts are that duke is extremely selective, even the best candidates are not always safe. being said, it looks like you have a good shot. but don’t expect anything.

Sure it’s selective but I think admissions is much more predictable than at HYPSM. If someone has a strong academic record, good essays, and good EC’s they will probably make the cut. mmata has the academics and EC’s covered and I have no reason to believe his/her essays will be bad. Hence, my prediction.

understood. i just think you should be cautious in telling somebody that they’re a shoe-in. even if it’s true it may make them feel like they don’t have to work as hard. i just think it’s better to assume that everyone who apllies is just as qualified as you are (which is true in many cases) and you must distinguish yourself. no matter how incredible you think you are or people tell you you are.

i’m not saying anything specific about mmata. this applies to anyone who wants to apply to duke. i think mmata is a great candidate - but nothing is certain.

if duke is what you want and you feel like you have worked hard to get there and think you have a pretty good chance, you are probably right. dont worry so much about numbers. worry about getting good recs and writing a truthful yet passionate essay.

I second that.
