Chances at NYU?

I come from a poor immigrant family. I was born in the United States. My Father was the son of poor immigrant parents. He was admitted into NYU but could not pay the fee, therefore had to go to the state school in Massachusetts. Would my Father’s acceptance to the school still be on file? Would this give me an advantage? After he graduated he became a successful psychiatrist. Financial need for NYU would not be needed. It has always been my dream to attend NYU.

Currently I’m a junior in high school. I’m previously from California and have been living in New York for roughly two years. What are my chances?

I attend a highly competitive art high school. I don’t plan on venturing into the arts for high school. I’ve been thinking about business as a major. Still deciding…

GPA: 98.9% (Since sophomore year)
SAT: (Diagnostic test taken from SAT Prep Class. Taken under test conditions) 2300 (English is significantly higher than math score. English-796, Math-500) I plan on working vigorously to increase my Math score by 100-200 points.
EC: Business and Marketing Program (school based), Basketball (been playing on team since 8th grade), Intern at prestigious art gallery in Chelsea

Wait until you’re a senior, and then we can chance you better!

My college counselor is encouraging me to apply now…which I would assume is regular decision? I took classes over the summer which would go towards my senior year. I would only need to complete two months of senior year.

SAT Scores are in multiples of tens. A 796 is not possible. And a 500 Math is really not good. And you can’t get a 2300 with a 500 in Math. Get that Math score waaay up - at least 650+.

As for ECs… they are a bit weak. I’d strengthen them big time. GPA is gorgeous though.

Unless you are applying undecided, and even if you are, you HAVE to strengthen your ECs. They’re really weak. You’re ECs should for the most part show a STRONG passion for your intended major, evidence of leadership, as well as maybe a few hobby ECs thrown in there. Just like monoclide said, you need to get your SATs correct before anything else, and then make them better.
