Chances at Oxbridge/Ivies/elites(SOPH)

Black male
State: TX
School: mildly competitive, rarely sends to top ivies and never to Cam.

Applying to:
Cambridge(UK)
Yale
Dartmouth
MIT
Carnegie Mellon
NYU

UW:3.83
W:4.61
Rank: 7/712

AP:
World History: 5
Environmental Sci: 5
Planning: Calculus BC, Chemistry, Statistics, Physics B, Physics C: Mechanics and E&M, Calculus AB. All my AP’s are self-study except World History.

I got a 240 on the PSAT, although that doesn’t count for anything. I’m doing the IB programme next year. I plan on taking several SAT II’s.

EC’S:Nat Honor Society, French Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta(math), Philosophy Club, Science Society, and Quiz League. I spent this summer in Cambridge(UK) taking Physics and I plan to do the same in the next two summers. I’m also working in a soup kitchen and shelter this school year.

Any suggestions on getting into these schools? Any other schools I should apply to or look at?

Oh, and are there any major scientiific competitions to be won in tx, just moved here.

Cambridge(UK): High Match
Yale: High Reach
Dartmouth: Low Reach
MIT: High Reach
Carnegie Mellon: In
NYU: Safety

Dude, go to Cambridge that’s awesome.

240 on the PSAT, huh? Nice. How did you prep, if I might ask?

Yea, I took this 2 wk course at UT Arlington.

It’s difficult to predict without ACT or SAT scores, but with the information you have provided us with, I would say:
Cambridge-high match/low reach? (I’m not too familiar with this school)
Yale-mid reach
Dartmouth-low reach
MIT-mid reach
Carnegie Mellon-match
NYU-low match
Also, what about Rice? Maybe you could get some form of scholarship there, though that decision is still within a few years to come. Good luck!

Any1 else wanna comment?

Cambridge isn’t a match for anyone. I assume you would be applying for Natural Sciences. Basically it’s impossible to guess how good your chances might be without knowing what grades you are likely to get on the IB or the Calculus and hard science APs because those are main things they will be interested in when deciding whether to call you to interview.

Seconded. Cambridge isn’t a match for anyone or at least a very, very select few. I’m not sure if UK schools have the same limits on international acceptances that US schools do, but it’s hard enough to get in from the UK.

Out of curiousity, what’s your intended major? What are you looking for in a school? Some of your schools are wildly different, culture-wise.

Regarding Cambridge admissions for Americans…

[Pembroke College : Overseas students : Applying from a North American High School](http://www.pem.cam.ac.uk/admiss/ug/overseas/highschool/index.html)

For North Americans Cambridge is ALWAYS a big reach.
