Chances at Princeton, Dartmouth, other ivies?

Hello,

I’m new to this site, but I will format my stats how other people have.

Here they are:

GPA: 3.9 Unweighted, 4.2 Weighted
ACT: 36 E, 30 M, 33 R, 29 S
AP Scores: AP English Language 5, AP Arts & History 5, AP Japanese Language and Culture 4

Extracurriculars:

Soccer player for 8 years.
Tutor for Spanish and English.
Started a LGBTQIAPD club at my school.
President of Social Justice Club.
Participate in Anime Club at my school.
Started a website to help LGBTQIAPD kids in high school.
National Hispanic Recognition Finalist.
Founding member of FURreal, my school’s furry club.

Income Bracket: $50,000
Interest of Study: Gender Studies or English. Definitely a Japanese minor. I love Japanesse culture and anime <3 lol :slight_smile:

To sum it up: I’m a Latino that came into the United States when I was 7 years old. I am undocumented (but that’s my culture and I am proud of it). I feel I have solid academics and extracurriculars, but compared to some others I have seen, I am not sure.

Sooo… a couple important things about me. I am a gender fluid, asexual student and a huge advocate for gender rights (YASS). I do NOT tolerate hate, sexism, racism, Islamophobia, transphobia, etc. I am looking for a university that actually supports rights and does something about people who propagate these disgusting qualities. SO pretty much a university with the smallest proportion of white male students (girls, am I right?). Universities need safe spaces to protect people like myself, and I don’t want to go anywhere where people can be hateful. I literally had to switch high schools because of my biology teacher. He was a white male (of course) who refused to acknowledge gender non-binary people. I am still recovering mentally from that experience and I do not want anything like that to happen again. What schools should I be looking at?

Have you toured Dartmouth? Based on what you are looking for, it doesn’t strike me as the best fit. Among the Ivies, it falls on the preppy, alpha male, jocky side.
With regard to the ACT. Is your composite a 32?. Very nice score, though could be low for the Ivies.

OK, so first I’m just gonna come right out and say that you sound arrogant/unnecessarily pointed about the whole gender thing, and clearly want people to say it , or want to somehow start conflict, or something weird that I can’t fully articulate. that whole end paragraph isn’t really necessary, just say “I want a school with a strong gender rights climate” or something. But beyond that, or maybe not quite beyond it, since you’ve made that such a huge part of what you want.

Both Princeton and Dartmouth are the most country club, “white male” ivies, which youve made clear you detest. If you’re looking for a super far-left ivy, try yale, or columbia. As for your chances here, I’d say they’re low… Your UW gpa is on-par, but your WGPA and ACT are low for them. While maybe you are all the things you say you are, a lot of colleges won’t really care too much. Just an overall commentary, Ivies maybe aren’t the best place for what you’re looking for.

Colleges I’d suggest looking at for a super “inclusive” community, although not for white males:

Almost any liberal artsy school, which should also have strong language/gender studies things.

Schools that have dedicated japanese language things:
Case Western, Claremont McKenna, Earlham College, Gettysburg College, Gustavus Adolphus College, SUNY Albany, University of San Francisco, Williamette University

On the whole, there are going to be a lot of schools with the environment you’re looking for. The ivies probably, in general, are among the lowest on that list. Best of luck regardless.

If you can make the admissions office laugh just as hard as you made me laugh, then I’d say you have a pretty decent chance.

It’s a fine goal to fight against “hate, sexism, (and) racism.” You may find it easier to convince other people that those are your goals if you quit prejudging white male students you’ve never met.

As a Latina, a parent, and an educator, I agree that your post comes off as arrogant and with kind of a bullying mentality. Please be polite. People here will try to help you.

I can’t think of any schools that don’t have white male instructors or students. Have you visited the ivies? I agree that the majority of the ivies won’t fit your personality; you really need to visit them to get a sense of what I am talking about.

Being undocumented will also be an issue, financially, if you don’t reside in California or Texas. Dream act doesn’t work in a lot of states. How will you pay? $60K per year is a lot of money to pay.

I agree that you should look into some of the liberal arts colleges. These are more liberal and “open minded”

Funny thing is people with this type of attitude are among the biggest bullies against gay white men – almost cuz they’ve not suffered enough in their minds.

OP: your stats and resume seem solid. Congrats on your academic achievements to date. Your antagonistic tone (and casual and unapologetic bigotry against white men) are a complete turn off. You don’t tolerate a lot of intolerable things. That’s good. But you’re blind to your own biases. That will limit the number of accepts you achieve if you don’t tamp that down.

What do you learn in Gender Studies?

I am not hating, just curious on what you would learn in four years about genders.

Look into LACs with a liberal environment like Wesleyan, Pomona, Oberlin, and Amherst (my brother goes here).

I can understand where the OP is coming from, but, ze needs to understand that anger and sarcasm translate poorly on the internet, no matter how justified they think they may be. That being said, the Ivy League, and in particular the colleges in hir subject heading, are not identical nor necessarily the beacons of light ze may be looking for. Of the possibly 28 colleges that appear to have chosen to label themselves “sanctuary campuses” for the purpose of non-cooperation in the mass arrest and deportation of their undocumented students, only two of them (Penn and maybe, Columbia) are members of the Ivy League. The other six have issued statements of varying degrees of equivocation on both the label and the underlying issues. Rolling Stone has a pretty good article that covers some of the concerns:
