Chances at SDSU

Chances for my brother please?

Major: Electrical Engineering

CSU GPA:3.5

New SAT: 1180 (Math:620 and Reading:560)

AP Scores: Human Geography, World, US History (2)

Senior Schedule:
AP Calculus AB (most likely going to drop down to College Prep because that is what I did due to the difficulty of the class)
AP Macroeconomics
AP Spanish Lang
AP Physics 1
College Prep English

His EI is 3980. He has 2 D’s on his transcript. The first one is his 2nd semester of AP Human Geo (freshman year), and the other one is his 1st semester of Honors Algebra 2 sophomore year (He made this up in summer school and got a B, but the D is still on his transcript). I am assuming he will still have to report the D come application time? We also live in SDSU’s service area, which I heard helps a lot. He is not interested in going anywhere else, if he does not get in he will go to a CC and transfer.

As long as he’s completed the a-g courses, and you’ve calculated his GPA and EI correctly, 3980 should do the trick as a local applicant to SDSU. A LOT can change in a year, especially when you are 17. I’d encourage him to apply to a couple of other schools, obviously, San Marcos but, why not give UCR and CSULB a shot as well?

Agree with @NCalRent, that an EI of 3980 as a local should get him into SDSU. The EI thresholds will fluctuate year to year, so always have several other Match and Safety schools on your list.

CSU’s will let you replace the D grade with the repeat grade on the application although both will remain on his transcript. What about the D in AP Human Geo? This is an a-g course so he needs to repeat this course or not get credit and find another a-g course to replace it.

@Gumbymom The first semester B or C he got is enough to satisfy that A-G requirement. The counselor said that he doesn’t need to make-up that D. The colleges will see it as “He tried a hard course Freshman year” and nothing else.

@NCalRent He doesn’t want to leave home for some reason. Also, the money involved with UC’s and living on campus somewhere doesn’t interest him either. I keep telling him to apply to UCR and UCSD (where I am attending in the fall, and still living at home),but he always says no.

I’d still encourage him to apply to San Marcos just in case.

Be sure he understands there’s no guarantee he’ll get into SDSU and see if he’s willing to accept a local CC as a fallback plan. It may come to that…

Why not have another option come next April?

He is perfectly fine with going to a CC, but I will definitely try to persuade him to keep his options open!

According to the CSU grade validation, a C- or higher in the 2nd semester of a class can validate a D in the 1st semester, not the other way around. I would have your brother verify this again with his counselor.

From the CSU Mentor application information:

HIGH SCHOOL HONORS AND AP CLASSES

Q : Can D grades in designated honors courses meet the a-g subject requirements?
A: No to satisfy the a-g subject requirements, students must earn C or better grades 2nd semester for year long courses.
