I am applying to do Applied Mathematics at SEAS

ACT: 33
SAT: 2140 CR:640 W: 700 M: 800
Sat II’s: Math II: 800 Chem: 720 Physics :710
GPA: 4.2
UW GPA: 3.9
I am at a school that is pretty much all IB, with only 3 AP Classes. It is ranked pretty highly in terms of public schools (we were number 6 in the nation at one time according to the “Challenge Index”), and we don’t do class rank. But i would definitely be in the top 10% in my class…

AP Calc BC: 5
IB Physics: 6
IB French: 5
IB Chem: 5 (doesnt really count bc i am taking IBH Chem, where I think ill get a 6)

This year i am slated to take IBH English, IBH Chem, IBH Math, and IB ITGS as my honors classes. I am also taking band, real world finance (a business class) and ib tok.

EC’s:
Varsity Swim (10-12), Captain in my senior year
Varsity Soccer (10-12), JV Soccer (9)
Acted in 6 plays/musicals at my school
Tutor kids in math/physics a lot
Founder/Captain at Cricket Club at my school (10-12)
Founder/Captain at Ping Pong Club at my school (11-12)
Chess Club (10-12)
Coach swim during the summer
Academic Council (10)
NHS

State: VA
Ethnicity: White (my parents are Australian immigrants, and i am a dual-citizen)

^pretty cool profile, the cricket, swim, acting combination appeal, sat and gpa look solid.

the IB scores look rather mediocre though, the 5 in IB chem which for some absurd reason you think will turn into a 6 when you do it HL doesn’t make sense, because 1) surely the ease of the class isn’t holding you back & 2) IBH chem is pretty rigorous. calc BC is obviously good.

If you think applying for applied math = they only look at math, you are seriously mistaken because
- the major is non-binding, so they’ll admit you to the school not the major
- apma majors are required to take a chem class and 4 semesters of physics, which gets very complex and difficult towards the end (ask denzera about physics 2601 at columbia)
- apma classes even at a higher level are taught in the context of physics, with physical examples (like heat flows in the partial differential equations class)

now you don’t need to retake your sat2s but you need to be solid all round with the same focus on math / science that any seas applicant needs. Other than that I’d say you have a good shot because your profile looks well rounded, you don’t come off as nerdy and you’ve got the stats.

thanks for the response

i said that about ib chem thing because i didnt really get to study for the chem exam because i had physics or french on the same day (i dont really remember). plus i knew it didnt “really” count. and my teacher gave me a predicted score of 6 when i had to ask for predicted scores when applying to another school.
