GPA in core subjects only is around a 3.6 something unweighted. Weighted is around 4.2? I’ve taken the most rigorous courses availablem but my school is super competitive with about 15 other kids with similar classes and better grades. Our school doesn’t rank though.

Tests
PSAT-222. In California, I’m pretty sure that’s enough to qualify for National Merit Semifinalist, since it’s usually at around 217.
SAT-2200 (750-CR, 740-W, 710-M) I’m planning to retake.
SAT II-Math 2C-800, World History-710, Literature-670
APs-World History-5, English Language-4, English Literature-4, US History-5, Physics-2, Calculus AB-5. Qualified for AP Scholar with Distinction.

Activities/Achievements
-Was on an award-winning yearbook writing staff for sophomore year before getting promoted to a Copy Editor junior year. I’ll continue to be Editor next year as well.
-Newspaper design and writing staff for 3 years
-Compete at around 20 Speech and Debate tournaments a year.
-Was ranked 11th in speech in the state
-Was ranked in the top 8 in Debate in the state
-Qualified to the state tournament for two years in a row
-Have been the top 30 in national tournaments in speech
-Served as Secretary for one of the largest Speech and Debate teams in the nation and will be debate captain next year
-Received school’s General Excellence award freshman year
-Featured in Who’s Who Among American High School Students

Do I even have a shot given my poor GPA? Any comments or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to add these:

-Took college psychology class in summer 2006 and received an “A”
-Worked as an intern for State Senator in summer 2006
-1 year on Junior Varsity Tennis

bump? (10 chars)

I think you have an excellent chance. With good essays you can even be in stern scholars.

My understanding is that NYU, Stern included, looks for students who are unique and “outside of the box” thinkers. You’re stats are great but between the newspaper and debate stuff you come off as really nerdy, in addition to looking like you spent your teenage years soley preparing for college. I’m not sure if its a good fit school for you. Good luck though

good chance…i got in with 2100 combined SAT, 1450 (old scale) many other factors play a role…esp for me: essays, gpa, rank, hooks i think are the biggest aside from pure SATs… but all in all…a good chance
