How difficult is it to get an acceptance from UT Austin for Communications major? Also, how good is this specific major there?
Stats:
GPA - 3.3 W/ 3.0 UW
IB Diploma student - math, economics, English (HL) and french, art, physics (SL)
Sats - 2000
ACT - taking it soon, expecting something over 27 or 30

International student (Would this be a negative in my application?)

ECs

1) Published several articles in the newspaper
2) Summe intership at a publication agency as a writer
3) summer internship at a marketing firm
4) been doing MUN for 4 years now
5) editor of a magazine at my school
5) Been invovled in an environmental club at school - took it seriously, worked a lot and got to represent the school at an international conference, secretary of the club (freshmen year)
6) A LOT of community service experience
7) been playing acoustic guitar for 4 years now

I think I can get good recommendations and write a good essay tooā¦My question is: How will my bad GPA affect my chances, if there are any?

3.What major in the College of Communication?
Advertising and Public Relations, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Communication Studies, Journalism, Radio-Television-Film?

I live in South Asia and my school does not rank its students so I wouldnāt know for sure but I guess Iād be in the top 25% of my classā¦also I want to major in advertising and public relations :)

I think you will have a tough time getting admitted to UT as an international student. Not many places are saved for out-of-state students. Even in-state residents have to be at the top of their classes to get admitted.

So English is not your native language?
Did you take TOEFL?

International students at UT have average SAT/ACT
SAT (out of 2400): 1819
ACT Composite: 27
College of Communication is going to look at your English score first because itās more important. Try to improve scores since there is nothing you can do about your GPA/rank.

Your ECs look very good. You need to write very good essays and submit resume. If you have any portfolio (articles, publications), post it somewhere online and include links in your resume.
And letters of recommendation will mean a lot.

There are not many international students in the College of Communication (undergraduate level), and since Communication becomes more and more global, the fact that you are international will be to your advantage.

@ Ya ya: Thank you so much Well, my GPA is low but Iām glad to hear that theyāll pay some attention to english scores cause Iāve maintained an A-range throughout High school (so far) on that (hopefullly, that will helpā¦)
and yes, I will be taking the TOEFL next month and Iām pretty sure Iāll do well on thatā¦
Since I will be applying for the college of communications, what SAT IIs do you think I should take? English and Math I or English and Math II?..Is a higher score in Math I considered better than a lower score in Math II for an applicant like me?
Thank you again! :)

Your GPA is not important. It is very difficult to compare GPA from different schools, especially overseas. And many schools weight it differently.
Rank is much more important and the rigor of the classes you take.
And comparable test scores (SAT/ ACT/ IB)

College of Communication doesnāt care about Math, they suggest that students take SAT II Math (if they donāt have AP/ IB credit) to get credit for Precalculus and be done with Math requirements, but donāt do it for Advertising, they have a required Statistics class.

Advertising is a CREATIVE major, so your essays, ECs, portfolio/resume and letters of recommendation will be very important.
And financial statement too. :D

That sounds comforting I guessā¦haha Thank you! and yess I do understand that nothing is guaranteed in the admission processā¦

With my stats and interests, do you guys suggest any safety school or a āmatchā? Iām currently looking for some good schools as such but Iām having a hard time finding dependable schoolsā¦

In Texas if people did not get into UT Austin and want a good advertising program they go to Texas State.
I donāt know much about the rest of USA.

You can go to College Search and Selection, post you stats there and ask what people could recommend.

Also, Advertising and PR are 2 different majors, some colleges have only PR, some have only Advertising. At UT you cannot do both and major in one and minor in the other one.
So you have to decide what you want to do more - Advertising or PR.

Here are just a few topics about advertising that popped up when I made search

If I do get accepted to UT (which I really really want), Iād choose to major in advertising and minor in PRā¦I donāt really want to go to texas state/never considered itā¦

The Office of Admissions uses holistic review:

To determine which major automatically admitted applicants will be admitted to
To make admission decisions for all applicants who are not automatically admitted to the university (i.e., Texas applicants who do not qualify for automatic admission, out-of-state applicants, and international applicants)

WHAT WE CONSIDER DURING HOLISTIC REVIEW

During holistic review, we consider academic achievement, personal achievement, and special circumstances.

Academic Achievement
Class Rank
Test Scores
High School Coursework

Personal Achievement
Written Essays
Activities Information (Your Resume)
Recommendations

Special Circumstances "

I donāt think students can major in advertising and minor in PR at UT.

Minor has to be outside of College of Communication.
And I believe students cannot double major in Advertising and PR though they can chose major in another department within the college.

@Ya ya: ⦠yes, I looked at the link you provided which was very helpful indeed! Iām just a bit confused and insecure about my position right now because as much as colleges promise a āholistic reviewā, isnāt the GPA what they look at first to give your application a chance to be reviewed holistically? Or are things different since this is more of a creative major and say, my math or physics scores arenāt going to bother them?

Will having a 2000 sat score save you (combined with ECs, recs and all that) even if you have a bad GPA? Because the people around me make a bad GPA look like the end of the world even if you did all the other requirements right haha O.o

Do you suggest I e-mail the admissions department of UTAustin itself to ask them about their GPA requirements and if I could submit a portfolio when applying for an advertising major?

i know one kid who got into that college (ut/comm) with less than stellar grades, but major EC and 700ish hours of community service, and also got an interview with key personnel in the college. as to āholisticā review, iād say, especially in state, it must be pretty spectacular hooks to get in above the class rank/gpa/test score basics.
