My GPA is a 3.9 on a 4 pt scale, but my situation is a bit different because my family has moved a lot and I’ve been to 3 high schools. I am very involved outside of academics, with community service, singing, varsity sports, clubs (with leadership positions), summer research internship, etc. (sorry if this sounds like I’m bragging.) but my ACT is only 30. Do you think this automatically wipes out any chances of getting in? Are there any personal stories of people with scores of 30 getting in to Wash U? Lastly, do you think I should apply to Vanderbilt?

Your ACT definitely doesn’t completely wipe you out, but it definitely makes these schools high reaches. Colleges will cut you some slack on your moving a lot, but only if you are right on the bubble, which I think you aren’t with these two schools. If you can afford it and really want to go to Vanderbilt, you should apply, but don’t expect to get in. That way if you do it will be a pleasant surprise!
