Math Team (9,10,11,12 Treasurer)
- For those ppl that have never heard of VHHS, we are pretty dominant in math team. We won nationals at mu alpha theta two years in a row; my sophmore year in Hawaii, and this past summer in Colorado.
- I have various trophies from freshman year on including placing at Nationals
- AIME qualifier for the past two years

Debate (9,10,11)
- I could’nt fit it into my schedule but I still get to go to a tournament or two. - Last year, I went to nationals for Alabama in Public Forum. My partner and I broke and made it to the top 20 teams in the nation. Northwestern and Baylor were recruiting there. I’m applying to Northwestern if I dont get in ED to WashU.
- I have various awards freshman and sophomore year for LD debate. I’ve broken in over 10 tournaments throughout the South including many speaker awards at those tournaments.
- Special Distinction in the National Forensic League

McWane Center Volunteers (9,10,11,12)
- Over 300 hours volunteering at the hands-on science center.
- Helped out with camps for kids and such over the summer.

Work
- Subway from Sep/05 - Summer/06
- Panera Bread from Summer/06 - Present
-Both 10 hour weeks, pretty standard, I enjoy working, it teaches me a lot about the value of money and hard work.

Interest
- I was part of the Discovery Weekend program at the end of last month. I loved my stay on campus and that is what motivated me to apply ED.
- Nominated by school for Danforth Scholarship
- I’m the only person applying ED to WashU from my school.

thanks for the help!

I’d say you have a very good chance at admission (probably 65-75%) based on what I see here. By the way, I work at Panera too, but in TN and I work 25 hrs/week

the panera i work for is very lenient with hours, heh.

bearcats; discovery weekend, national merit letter sent to school, college info sessions, emailing with 2 reps, and interview. enough?

oh yea, and ED

btw, are NYLF nominations worthy of a spot in my resume? are they prestigious? or just one of those “whos who” things.

by showing interest i dont mean like seeming desperate an just going to all the programs and everything , that;'s a good thing dont take me wrong, but i mean if u apply ED they know u want to go anyway,
what I mean showing them THE REASONS why you like them, good reasons, and that makes u stand out in the ED pool

Don’t put the NYLF thing on your app. It will seem to the admissions comittee that you are laundry-listing your accomplishments, desparate to prove how “eligible” for admission you are. Stress the things you enjoy and shed light on these aspects of your app. Everybody gets those letters and they are, for the most part, a scam.

ok, i was just wondering whether there was an prestige attached to the nomination, the price tag seems like a waste.

thanks for clarifying, bearcat. the initial “show interest” was kind of vague.

your sat scores are not that hot but i think you’ll have a great chance at wash u

thanks for all the replies so far.

can you guys also list match/reach for my other schools?

Northwestern- I’m in contact with their debate coach
Duke
Vandy
Emory
Rhodes
Tulane- safety
UPenn- i dunno

wut did u score on the aime? i think that’s important.i scored 8 and 9 last 2 years…last year i needed 1 more to qualify for USAMO…i got 2 calls from math professors from u michigan and wash u

4, its not that great. I was hoping debate would be my main hook. I know NU values its debate program, does WashU even have a debate team?

bearcats, is your first name Michael?

no my first name is not michael…not all asians are called michael…but i m asian…haha

well i was just asking because i’ve heard of a michael chen from hotchkiss. my name is also michael chen.

anyways, can more ppl give me chances for my other schools as well as washu?

last bump, any more chances for my other schools?

For Wash U, you’re about an average ED applicant so figure you have about average chances - between 15 and 20%.

Northwestern - High Match
Duke - Reach
Vandy - Match/Low Match
Emory - Match/Low Match
Rhodes - Safety
Tulane- Safety
