Please be honest and thank you.

If you have the time and money, try to get your SAT up to 2200+ (Yale does superscore, so if you have a combined 2200+ from two sittings, that will also work). You may want to try the ACT; that way you wouldn’t have to worry about SAT II’s if you score well (above a 32 is what you would shoot for). If your essays and recs are amazing (truly amazing), then you may have a fair shot. Right now, I don’t see anything extracurricularly that stands out.

what would you say about extracurriculars is amazing and stands out?

btw,
GPA 3.97 unweighted, weighted 4.3+ approx, havent recalculated recently so probably higher

rank: 2/336, most likely will be salutatorian behind 5 valedictorians

Try to get your test scores up (all 700s would be more realistic for yale), but don’t be discouraged by what people say on this site. As a yale undergraduate, i can guarantee you that most students are much more average/didn’t change the world in high school than people seem to think. Do what you like to do/do it well, try to get very good test scores and grades, and write original/interesting essays, and i’m sure you’ll have a fair shot.

thank you very much kwijiborjt! you give me some hope lol. yes i am focused on sat 2 scores and i believe i can do it with proper studying. i appreciate your advice and will certainly keep it in mind!

does getting under a 700 in one section really hurt your chances?

on sat reasoning or sat subject tests? im not sure if they really HURT your chances as far as i know but its best to get 700 and above. if they see an improvement in scores from one sitting to another, however, i hear that is favorable.

bottom line though, they do want good scores.

the sat reasoning-- rd31 said shoot for 2200+, which i have superscored.
Do you think a higher score on the ACT makes up for anything?

what are you looking to make up for?

getting less than 700 in a section of the sat reasoning… and possibly subpar sat subject test scores.

well as mentioned before, your superscore is 2200+. colleges only care truly about the best score. sure, they’ll see your lower than 700 section but it wont be definitive of anything else. it won’t be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

ive read some threads that said that taking the ACT will eliminate the need to take subject tests but im not sure if it is true or not.

Taking the ACT WILL eliminate the need to take subject tests. You can either take the SAT + SAT II’s OR just the ACT. It’s an adjustment to admissions requirements that they incorporated just last year.

that’s good to know, thank you. im thinking of taking act in sept
