Well, I just discovered this site so I guess that I can listen to a couple of opinions: what are my chances at Duke and Georgetown? These schools are beautiful (I’ve visited them) and the surroundings are just… wow. I think that attending one of these two would be an awesome experience. The courses they offer are very dynamic and I think that they really open up your mind. Also, Im applying for Pre-Medicine. As these are my top choices, I also have several safeties (which I also would be happy in). Anyway - my chances? opinions? what else can I do?

Country: Nicaragua - living here and school here (US school system, all courses in English)
ethnicity: 100 % latin (citizenship of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, where I was born)
School background: Private and catholic
First language: spanish

(I included these facts just for randomness)

Academics -------

GPAs
- At my school, its the 0 - 4.0 range - APs can give you a little more than 4 though

9th Grade: Unweighted - 3.99 (no APs or honors available for freshmen - I did take an AP exam self studied though, more on it later)
10th Grade: Unweighted - 3.98
Weighted - 4.07
11th Grade: Unweighted - 3.96
Weighted - 4.04
12th Grade: Haven’t started it yet

Rank

1 in a class of 14 (very small school)

AP Exams
- Since we don’t have much resources (e.g. textbooks, classrooms, qualified teachers), AP courses are very limited in my high school

9th Grade: AP World History - 4 ---- self studied for it with my history teacher (who happens to interview those interested in Georgetown at Managua)

10th Grade: AP Art History -5 ---- self studied for it (I love art, visiting a museum is like at day at Disney to me)
AP European History - 4

11th Grade: AP Biology - 5

12th Grade - will take
AP English Literature and Composition
AP Italian Language and Culture - self study
AP Spanish Literature - obligatory for everyone

(I was considering AP US Government because I find it so interesting! One of the reasons that I studied Art History was simply because I wanted to know, to learn - this is the case again so Ill consider it, anyway back to my background)

SAT – plan to re take it

Critical Reading (horribly tough for most of us) - 650
Math - 710
Writing - 720

TOEFL - Not taken it yet

SAT IIs

Biology-M - 740
Italian - 710 (did it somewhere in 10th Grade)
World History - 750
Will do: Math (not sure about what level yet)
Literature

Academic Awards

AP Scholar with Honor Award

Bunch of First place awards - e.g. World History, Biology, Alebra II, Spanish (throughout the years), Chemistry, AP European History, AP Biology, English (throughout the years), etc.

Extracurriculars —

Operation Smile: Active member since the 7th Grade and going. This senior year I will be the group’s treasurer

Knowledge Bowl in Central America: Began in Junior Varsity (9th Grade), made it into Varsity (10th), and since Junior year I’ve been Varsity’s captain

Athletics —

Sport I play and love: Racket ball - trying out for national team. I play since I was about 13 and at first it began as a hobby. After practicing twice a week for about a year I noticed that it made me more keen mentally and also with my senses (interesting) - anyway I like it a lot and I see no reason why to quit from this sport

Skills —

Sadly, I don’t play an instrument or create beautiful art :(

Languages: Spanish, English, and Italian. I began to learn Italian for fun when I was 10 every Saturday morning - although it was tiring and challenging, it was worth it. I love the culture and the language and speak it any time I have an opportunity!

Jobs and Volunteering —

8th Grade - 9th Grade Summers: Worked at USAid Seed Program here in Nicaragua (volunteer) - the program consists of helping poor people achieve their dreams by sending them with full scholarships to certain universities in the United States and hence opening them to the world and better opportunities

10th Grade - 11th Grade Summers (and probably the upcoming 12th Grade Summer too): Volunteered at a local public hospital. I would be rotated weekly from one area of the hospital to the next to more or less adopt a vision about the world of medicine - what it implies, how does it make me feel, etc. Each time I would be rotated, I was taught the mechanisms and helped nurses or doctors. Even though they are small things that I help with, it makes me feel like I make a difference there.
PS - The most awesome part is the ER

Alumni —

Duke - Mom’s brother 1999
Georgetown - Distant cousins (one of them is currently a sophomore)

** So, give me your opinions please! Sorry about the random comments here and there by the way. Thank you!
