Chances ED, please? Asian F from VA

<p>I haven’t started one of these WAMC threads yet, but I am making an exception for JHU. I’ll try to keep this short!! :D</p>

<p>I absolutely LOVE JHU and it is definitely my first choice. I plan on majoring in Biology while following a pre-med program. I have visited once, and plan on two more times, including for a “non-evaluative” interview. My stats aren’t superb, especially my numbers, but this is the school I really want to go to. Could you all please assess my chances of getting in Early Decision??</p>

<p>Middle-income, normal public school</p>

<p>GPA: 3.85 W, 3.71 UW (at my school, A’s are 94%+ and not all first-year IB classes get weights. IB courses are normally two years. Honors/Pre-IB classes don’t get weights.) Top 3% of class.</p>

<p>Hardest courseload offered at school – will have taken 13 IB classes (4 HLs, maximum # of HL’s permitted), 1 AP (only AP at school), 2 Honors, and 3 Pre-IB classes by the time I graduate. I’m an IB Diploma Candidate if that helps.</p>

<p>PSATs: 99th percentile
SAT I’s: (Old) 740M, 640V
SAT I’s: (New) 740M, 610CR, 630W
SAT II’s: (Math 2C) 800
SAT II’s: (Physics) 540 [maybe I shouldn’t have picked this one]
SAT II’s: (Biology) to take in Oct.
IB Tests: (Geography SL) 5/7, (Math SL) 7/7
AP Test: (Govt) 4/5</p>

<p>Those are my number stats. For extracurricular activities, I do the things I enjoy the most so there is a lot of correlation between the activities, as you can see. I haven’t done anything extraordinary outside of my community, so there aren’t any national or regional recognitions, but I hope it’s okay. I’m very committed to everything I do. There’s more detail, but here’s what’s happening this 2005 year:</p>

<p>-editor of the yearbook and lit. mag
-captain of cross country and track: includes district honors, MVP, Coaches’ Award
-president of service club at school that has been recognized district- and county-wide
-hospital candy striper (300+ hours)
-school rep for youth leadership program
-county health department West Nile Virus program intern
-manager of wrestling team
-V math team</p>

<p>There are some other things that I’m not currently into but were in the past:
-JV and V tennis team
-president of FEA
-secretary of Viet. Club
-church youth group member</p>

<p>Work Experience: I haven’t had a job except for being an office assistant at a orthopedic dept. two summers ago.</p>

<p>Honor Societies: National, Spanish, and Journalism</p>

<p>Essay #1 should be okay, essay #2 is not so good, but I’m working on it! :slight_smile: My rec’s should all be excellent except that my math teacher’s may not be as good in comparison (I can’t take the rec sheet back now!).</p>

<p>astrife: what do you mean you have to bite your nails in anticipation? It sounds as though we have around the same stats. If you think I have a “very good chance,” then you do too! :)</p>

<p>t3hcan0n: lol, the people at the hospital are actually really awesome and I like it! Don’t worry – next summer, I plan on getting on a floor too instead of just working the volunteer office. That will be less repetitive.</p>

<p>Thanks for the replies! Does anyone have any other input? If it helps, my GPA had an upward trend. I’m pretty much set on this school, and I wanted to see if I was being realistic. Any tips to make these stats look better??</p>

<p>Will having to apply for financial aid hurt my chances? </p>

<p>If I were to be accepted, my family and I would be looking for about $23000 in aid. That’s the average package they give out, but I don’t know if that’s too much to ask for. Our household income about $160000. When my dad did the JHU financial aid online calculator, it said we would qualify for the average aid package.</p>

<p>Well if your screwed… then so am I because they would be paying 90% of the cost of attendance for me due to my financial circumstances.</p>

<p>I think the way that schools like JHU look at it is kinda like this. If we pay this kid’s way through school (which is so outrageously meanial compared to their endowment) what are the chances they will go on to make millions and donate back to us when they are older? That’s why things like “legacy” are so important because Harvard or whatever school is gaining support from a particular family, and if anyone from the family goes on to make a substantial amount of money, who are they going to owe their success to? It’s all business my friend, and our way of showing them we are a good investment is through our applications. So I don’t believe you should really worry about money being a factor in their decision to admit your or not.</p>

<p>the Hopkins admissions process is need blind except for admitting students off the wait list – so a students need for aid is not factored in when the adcoms make their decisions. </p>

<p>the two people from my school who were accepted had really high everything. their SAT’s (old) were around 1500 and their GPA’s were 3.9 to over a 4.0. it’s a tough school, to apply and to study there.</p>
