*** I don’t have many extracurricular activities, which worries me. How many extracurriculars/leadership roles are colleges looking for? And do SAT scores really matter (e.g. will they reject someone if he has a 2340 instead of a 2400)?

Thanks!

Well, I can’t really chance you accurately, seeing as how you have yet to take the SAT and everything, but it seems like you’re gonna be on the right track. I don’t see where you’re getting that you don’t have any ECs, because awards like the ones that you listed can definitely go on applications. If you can get good scores on your tests, and keep up your GPA, then you’ve definitely got good shots at the schools that you’re aiming for.

As far as your questions at the end go, there isn’t a magic number for ECs and leadership positions. What they look for is dedication to certain things, impressive things that you have done personally, and your abilities to lead things. Also, no college will look at a 2340 SAT score as a bad score. I know that on the most recent SAT that had I gotten one more math question and one more writing MC question, I would have had a 2400, but those two questions meant that I got a 2320 instead. The difference between these scores may seem like large, but colleges understand that sometimes the difference between a 2400 and a 2320 (using my case for an example) can be 2 questions out of however many are on the test.

Hopefully this helped! Chance me back?

Glad to see another sophomore on CC. From what your credentials are currently and what they could be by senior year, i’d say you are poised to be on track for these schools and higher ones like ivies.

To answer your question, a difference in 60 points isn’t really going to matter much. Even with a score of say 2200, will be able to get into nearly any school you are looking at. Secondly, your ECs are fine. You don’t need to join 13 clubs to impress a college admissions officer. In your coming years, just try to focus on what you truly enjoy.

Colleges that would also be good fits are Rice University (Houston), Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh) and Wake Forest University (pretty close to Raleigh)
