Hey NYU community! As the title indicates, this is just another one of many “chances” posts. If possible, designations such as “reach,” “match,” “low reach,” “high reach,” and “safety” would be great.

GPA:
Unweighted: 3.52
Weighted: 4.18
Trend: Sharp upward trend
Rank:
top 10% - possibly higher, but our school only tells us what tenth we’re in, and i’m in the top tenth.
Course Rigor:
I took the hardest classes my school has to offer - all honors and AP classes. The AP classes are:
AP Government
AP Microeconomics
AP Language and Composition
AP United States History
AP Environmental Science
AP Microeconomics
AP Psychology
AP Calculus AB
AP Biology
AP Literature
Standardized testing:
Haven’t taken anything yet. I was supposed to take an SAT in March, but there was a debate tourney on the same date, so I decided not to take it. I recently took a practice ACT test during spring break, and got a 31 (34 R 29 M 31 E 29 S). I’m planning on taking it four times, and I’m also taking ACT prep classes at the moment. I’m hoping for a 32-34 on my last try. My most recent SAT practice score was 2040, but I like the ACT more as of right now.
ECs:
Debate Team - Captain Jr & Sr year (I’m not a senior yet, but the coach already let me know in advance that I’d be the captain for the 2011-2012 year as well)
Newspaper Club - Associate Sports Editor Jr year, coming back Sr year
Tennis - Sophomore year
Volleyball - Freshman year
Football + Wrestling - Freshman and Sophomore year
Roughly 100 volunteer hours at a PADS homeless shelter
Planning on attending a National Youth Leadership Forum for Law over the summer
Awards:
3rd place at Conference for Lincoln-Douglas Debate
3rd place at ISTA State Tournament for Lincoln-Douglas Debate
All-State Lincoln Douglas Debater @ N

I want to eventually go to law school, and I’m hoping that my ECs demonstrate a specified interest (Debate, the NYLF Law, Newspaper club, Business Law Class).

If there’s anything else you need, let me know! (:

@JaxJags: Thanks, and congrats on getting in! I wish I had a 3.8. ): Oh, and on a side note, I think the Jags will make playoffs next year, but fall in the first round. I hope they draft Kellen Moore in 2012/next year - I don’t think Garrard is a long term answer.

I bet you have a very good chance – only 62% of NYU’s admits are in the top 10% of their class, and you are. My only question is why you would take the SAT 4 times, especially if you do well enough the first or second time ?!?

@anxiousenior: Thanks so much for the positive input! I thought my GPA would be a pretty big obstacle, but your post makes me feel better about that. As for why I’m taking the ACT 4 times; I’m applying for some merit scholarships (from the school itself and other sources), and I want my transcript/tests to appear as appealing as possible. We’re not in the best financial situation, so such scholarships are very important. Also, I want to “balance out” my subpar GPA with a high test score, hopefully. Again, thanks for the input! (: On a side note, my friend just got her letter from Tisch, and she’s stoked. She’s starting to rub it in. D:<

Awful achievements…what have you been doing with your life throughout high school?
Hahaha just kidding, man, thats a pretty impressive list you got there, how did you even fit 10 AP classes into your junior/senior years? But as SiXELA said, it does depend on the school. For example, CAS would probably accept you but the same can’t be said for Stern.
Also, I met the VP of undergrad admissions at a college seminar, and he said applicants should avoid listing every sport they’ve ever been involved in, and should generally include only ones relevant and consistent with the rest of their application. Apparently the admissions community, no matter how sincere your involvement in the activity was, will simply see it as an attempt to fill up your application…something to consider.

@pch340 - thanks for the tip! I guess I won’t list those sports, just the ecs that revolve around my interest. What about my community service/volunteer stuff? I forgot to mention, I have 100+ hours at my local PADS homeless shelter. It has nothing to do with my debate/law geared interests, so does this mean it has no merit? @SiXELA + pch340 - As there’s no certain school or major that I “have” to take in order to get into law school, I’m not one hundred percent sure which college I want to apply to. Most likely CAS. Does NYU allow you to apply to multiple colleges within NYU? If so, I’d like to throw in one to Stern as well, with the knowledge that I probably won’t get in.

On a side note, got a 33 on my last practice test! (: And I have another 6-7 months to raise my test score. Hopefully I can hit the 35 mark! Anyone else wanna chip in? Also, which college in NYU offers majors in the neighborhood of English or Psychology? Or can i major in anything NYU offers regardless of the college? Sorry, I’m still kinda new to the college scene. Dx

^ you only get to apply to one college (sad, I know ). CAS would probably be your best bet if you want to have a lot of different majors to explore, or Gallatin if you’re creatively indecisive. For CAS you look pretty good, Gallatin it depends on your essays. As for Stern, your stats (SAT, UW GPA) will need to be higher (based on what I’ve seen hereabouts).

it depends because nyu has been going up in ranks the past couple of years. this year was a dogfight, and it was really hard to get in. I was in the top 5% with a 3.9/4.0 unweighted and i got waitlisted for CAS. i think a lot of it is luck. T-T

Got another 32 on the IL-mandatory ACT in late April. On the bright side, I’ve heard that NYU superscores the ACT. Superscored, I now have a 33! (36R 32M 32E 30S) and a 12/12 on the essay. With some studying over the summer, hopefully I can hit 33-34. But I’m also planning a lot of other activities, so I’m not sure how that’ll go. I saw someone in these forums mention that NYU uses “tiers of desirability” when deciding how much financial aid to give to admitted students. I’m planning on applying to CAS, in addition to just chancing me for the school, can anyone provide input on my “desirability tier?” Probably low - seeing as my UW GPA is not pretty.

Hmm. Stern would be great, but I’m a bit put off because I can’t apply to multiple schools within NYU, and if I get rejected at Stern, I can’t attend NYU. </3. New York just seems like an awesome place to go to school, with all the internship opportunities, sports teams, city life, etc. I’m actually visiting NYU next month. superexcited, can you tell me what your UW GPA was? I’m seriously considering it, but will most likely apply to CAS. Also, SAT II scores were put up today, and I received 780/800 on the U.S. History test, and a 710 on the Math II test.

@azhong - I wish I could! That would be pretty cool. Maybe I could even get my own reality TV show! Aha, sadly, I can’t. But your statistics seem much more impressive than mine, aha! And thanks! I’m attracted to NYU not only because of its academic reputation, but because of its location. NYC is the best city in the world, #realtalk. But I’ve been hearing mixed info regarding financial aid; how generous is NYU with financial aid?

The words ‘NYU’ ‘generous’ and ‘financial aid’ can never appear in a sentence unless there is a ‘not’ included in that sentence.
NYU FA is notorious for giving bad FA. You will have to take out loans. NYU does not meet full need.
