I never know what people want out of these things… At a school like Brown, your chances are pretty much the same as most people’s chances. Probably about 10%.
-Your grades show a slight downward trend.
-You got “National French Awards” and studied in Paris but you have a B in French and are not taking an Honors or AP French course next year.
-Dropping science your senior year was probably not the best move, especially since you’ve only taken Bio and Integrated Science. Why not try AP Chem or Physics?
-Your ACT is great but not perfect. No need to worry about adding another point to the ACT, just concentrate on studying for the subject tests.
-Your ECs are generally strong but some look paid for, but it’s good that you have a job, as that shows work ethic.

My conclusion? You’re a strong applicant, but so are about 20,000 of the other 30,000 kids applying. With your grades, scores, ECs, you have about as good a chance as anyone, but what will really make you stand out are your essays, and possibly your recommendations. Good luck!

really, it is just interesting to get perspective. I know there’s no formula to get in, but hearing what others think is always good.

my school doesn’t offer an AP or honors french class next year since there are only going to be four students in the class. science, yes I am slightly mad at myself for having dropped, but it would have prevented me from doing classes more related to my hope for an IR/ polisci related major… I am hoping this justifies it a bit more, especially since IS is technically chem/phys/bio combined.

thanks!

I have to disagree with whoazoe that you have a “10% chance”. I’m assuming he/she said this based on Brown’s acceptance rate. Acceptance rate does not equal probability of admission. If a school has an acceptance rate of 10%, does that mean a kid with a 1500 SAT, 21 ACT, 3.0 GPA and “video game club” as only EC has the same chance as a kid with a 2300 SAT, 34 ACT, 3.9 GPA and an encyclopedia of ECs? Nope, the 10% is just how many of those applied got in. Really, the only way you’ll find out if you’ll get in is by applying.
