Chances for a poor kid.

This chance thread is for one of my friends. Since I had the account, he asked me to post this for him.

Spanish Honor Society

National Honor Society

Habitat for Humanity

Volunteered extensively at school library, helped create numerous systems to help the library.

School TV Studio - Morning Show - Media Creator, created innovative intros and graphics for the show. I gotta admit, they looked really cool.

Has private pilot’s license, one of the few hobbies he saved up to afford flying lessons, its one of his passions.

Other-Very important

Designed a fully-functional corporate website for a medium size construction company.

Worked around 4-5 hours after school every day and full-time on weekends in medium size construction company. Started with manual labor and then moved up to project management and design/engineering.

Worked to support family income.

Special considerations-

First Generation

Low-income family

Colleges he wants to apply to-(I personally think this is a short list, but don’t know what other schools to reccomend. Can you guys help me reccomend some?)

Princeton(ED)
Cornell
Stanford
University of Texas - Austin
University of Virginia
Rice

Rutgers-(Safety)

He thinks that the fact that he is low-income will help him a lot. I actually saw that Princeton has a hard time attracting low income students. What do you guys think? Please suggest some other colleges he could look at. This kid is really hardworking, and I’d love to see him go to a good college. I know he han’t been able to concentrate 100% on his studies due to his work, and he works pretty hard. After reading these forums, I know that Princeton is a crapshhot for almost everyone, but what else do you think he needs for his favorite, Cornell?

As always, appreciate your help a lot, guys.

Wat a jip…construction name construction worker…now we know these are your chacnes. Can we help you? DUHH.

O Well. P’ton doesnt have ED for you and the rest would be slight reaches to reaches

Rutgers is a saftey and low income will help you.

I knew I’d get a response like yours, Jkwon. I mean, it sounds pretty obvious this would be my chance thread given my previous threads about construction workers, but my own chances thread will be coming soon in about half a year.

The fact that he’s a construction worker and kind of in the same situation as me is why I got to be good friends with him. But you’ve got a point. My thread will look kinda like my friends, so I’m interested in what his chances are.

Anyway, the main point here is to get some chances.

I forgot to mention that the guy will be working in an internship in an architecture firm his senior year.

frankly, i have no idea. i try to be impartial, so not colouring ur mind with any false hope of discouragement is best i think.

Oh Pleeeeease, a poor kid who saves up for flying lessons. Good luck with that one. Adcoms do recognize inconsistencies. Regardless, an Asian kid from NJ with a 1400? No chance at Princeton, Stanford, UVA. Not great at the others accept Rutgers either.

Low income and first generation are small tip factors that mostly benefits URMs.

Princeton(ED) - reach
Cornell - possible
Stanford - possible
University of Texas - Austin - safe match
University of Virginia - match
Rice - match
Rutgers - safety

dont listen to suze dude…she doesn’t know the difference between accept and except.

ya suze, why are you so mean with all of your answers all the time, its not that they are the cold hard truth either, they are just really mean

lol as much as I agree with you, benitocamela, I’m pretty sure she knows the difference. (Dartmouth, was it?)

Well, I can see how she might have thought that getting flying lessons didn’t fit with the whole low-income thing, but its one of his big passions, and pursued it with a lot of diligence. He’s actually taken me up, and it’s really cool!

Thanks for the responses so far guys. Please keep them coming!

Buuuuump. Please.

I believe Princeton does have ED

http://www.princeton.edu/pr/admissions/u/appl/06/pdf/PU_appl_0607_earlyagree.pdf

UT Austin and rutgers are both safeties, decent chance at uva bc they care more about rank then anything else and if he was 15 out of 300 that would make him a prime candidate considering he was forced to work. the others would be helped if he got his scores up to the 2250 range as in cementing his status as completely deserving despite having to work 5 hours a day and all weekend and i find it flatly incredible that he was able to keep his studies up. oh, and suze, what more could the kid have done? agreed his scores r low, but could u handle school getting home at 10 every night and then working all weekends? on top of that, colleges know income is the highest indicator of sat scores, ur overreliance on common data sets leads u to the conclusion that because the probability is low based on the stats, that he is stupid to apply, did u take ap stats among the many im sure u took to impress common data set driven adcoms?

Princeton has ended ED and Suze is correct. She does write the cold-hearted truth.

just bc its cold hearted doesnt mean its the truth

hey, construction, tell your friend to apply to duke, their pratt school of engineering is REALLY good. Oh, and i think he got some pretty good chances. however, if he wants to major in engineering, tell him to take more math related-tests and classes and do well in them. hope this helps. one more thing, out of the ivies, cornell is the easiest to get into, they have a 22% RD acceptance rate.

True, Cornell is the easiest to get into. But its still 22%!

All of your chances are kinda working out, since the guy’s decided to go ahead with all of the colleges on his list. He’s not applying to Duke, since he has a long history of parents going to UNC, and the rivalry thing is humongous in his family.

I’m personally concerned with what Suze said. Is she really giving him the cold hard facts, or trying to take his morale into the abyssssssssss? I ask this because there are quite a few posts saying he has good chances, but Suze said he had none. Is what Suze said true?

Um, is she?

bumpizzle.
