Standarized tests will ruin me!

I recently took the ACTS and retook the SATS. Apparently ACT scores come out tomorrow…i’m aiming for around 25.

My GPA is awfully low because of very poor freshman/sophomore years, it was between these two years that i made the move from Singapore to Hawaii. My previous school was an international school, so i have the whole “living abroad” thing to separate me from other Hawaii students. My school in Hawaii prides itself in being one of the only IB schools in the state. The IB program is more challenging than AP, but it is looked upon as equal. My first quarter senior year GPA is 3.9, which is a dramatic change from my previous year. I’m hoping they will recognize a rising trend in my GPA.

I’m not sure, because I know my friend had a 3.4 and low act/sat scores (pretty sure yours are higher), and she got waitlisted. I think the reason why she got waitlisted instead of rejected is because she’s an Indiana resident, and they have to take more Indiana residents than out-of-staters.
Indiana’s pretty cut and dry: If you have a certain GPA and standardized score, you’re in, otherwise, probably not. I don’t know what that is, but you’re probably pretty close. Good luck :)

thanks for all of your input! Indiana seems like a great place after you’ve been stuck on an a tropical island all year round with almost no significant weather changes. ACT scores come out in a couple hours, and i really hope that will increase my chances of getting in. I’ve heard public schools (such as Indiana) really don’t care about your extracurriculars; most of their decision is based on gpa. And that is what i’m mostly worried about…

Indiana was supposed to be my reach! Well, Indiana and Penn State. Thank you guys so much for all of your feedback. My college counselor is no help because I dont think anybody has gone from my school to Indiana University.

I wouldn’t rely very much on “hugalabagala”'s views above–I notice that he/she has logged in only once, posted three negative comments about IU-B and the state of Indiana (on three different IU-B threads) all within a 6 minute time span, and then never posted again.

Notice also that the person never describes what is so bad about the school or the state–but just posts that the place is “bad” or “sucks”.

Generally, this is the sign of a “■■■■■”–a person who creates a login specifically with the plan of posting to create controversy. Usually such a person keeps creating new logins and goes from one school to another or one website to another–and criticizes whatever is being discussed.

FYI–the good and the bad of the internet.

I’m not saying IU-B is perfect, but if you want to criticize IU-B (and I have both criticized and praised the school in various areas), you should at least spend more than 1 minute–and you should give your reasons.

oh no
i accidently submitted my first draft summary of extracurriculars! i think i left out a couple of my ec’s in my first draft…do they REALLY look at that as a factor, or do they mostly base the decision off of GPA and test scores? i’m freaking out about it right now, ugh.

They look at the ec log if you’re a borderline applicant. You seem to have a good amount of ec’s, so I don’t think it should affect your admission negatively if you leave a couple of them off.

OP–Are you a borderline applicant? Here are the facts:

Based on information from the Common Data Set the 3 “very important” factors in admissions are Class Rank, GPA, and rigor of HS schedule. SAT/ACT is “important.”

For the class of 2009, 35.6 percent ranked in the top 10 percent of their high-school class, and 71.8 percent ranked in the top quarter of their high-school class. Among Indiana residents, 39.8 percent were in the top 10 percent and 77.1 percent in the top quarter.

For the class of 2008, about 65% of admits had a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Roughly 85% had GPAs of 3.25 or higher.

For the class of 2009 the average SAT was 1203. I’ve not seen stats on the 25th-75th percentiles for this class yet. For 2008, the midrange ACT was 23-29. Your ACT puts you near the top of the midrange, but the averages went up between 2008 and 2009.

Have you taken 4 full years of Math and English? 3 Full years of Science? 3 Years of a Foreign Language? 3 Years of Social Studies? This is beyond what is required and would look good for admissions.

I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether you are a borderline applicant. Good luck.
