Chances for california schools

I didn’t think I’d ever be doing this… but as March and thus, admission decisions, draws closer, I’m getting more anxious and desperate.

CA resident
Weighted UC-GPA: 4.0

(thank god for the uc gpa system!!! my regular high school GPA is only around 3.6, due to some screw-ups in my freshman year…)

SAT
CR-700
M-680
W-700

Subject
US history-780
Math 2-670

AP tests
Psych 5
USH 5

ECs-
This is what I’m most worried about. See, I’ve moved around a lot (7 or 8 times in my life) so my educational environment has never been too stable… so I didn’t get “involved” very much. But I explained this briefly for one of my short UC personal statements.

-Editor-in-Chief of yearbook (something I’m really passionate about, and I also wrote my 600-word personal statement about this)
-Commended Scholar
-Some volunteering (but not much), mostly at the public library
-Have had the responsibility for taking care of younger sisters for years

Senior schedule
AP US Gov’t
AP Macroeconomics
AP Human Geography
Physics
AVID Tutor
Yearbook
Advanced Composition / Brit Lit

Got 4.0 for the first semester, if that matters. (Although senioritis is seriously starting to kick in)

I’m feeling pretty confident about my personal statements. I’m a grammar-Nazi and a strong writer (hence, co-Editor-I-C for copy)… Also had two smart, grammar-savvy English teachers read my essays, so I’m good.

Major: Half were under Psychology and the other half for Communications.

Schools:
Top 2-UCD and Cal Poly SLO
Would consider-UCSB and SDSU
Safety-SFSU
Do not want!-Berkeley

Yeah, I know… But basically, I only applied to Cal because of my parents. I’m sure it’s a wonderful school and all, but it just isn’t for me. (My parents only want bragging rights with their friends) Even if I do get accepted (ha!) I’m 99% sure I would go somewhere else.

Thanks guys. And good luck to everyone.

I think you have excellent chances.

UC’s dont count freshman year in the UC GPA, so your GPA may actually be higher.

the 3.6 is WITH my freshman year grades, and 4.0 is for 10th and 11th a-g classes… I think that’s right?

And thank you collegemom16. Even though it’s one person’s opinion, it’s still a big relief to hear.

My pleasure
mofom4n UCD does not count the freshman grades but Cal Poly does.

I’d say you’re at least a match for all your schools except berkeley. But even at berkeley you have a decent shot. Nice job!

Hahaha… Wow… To hear a person say that they DON’T want Berkeley is something like music to my ears. It’s a nice breath of fresh air. =D

You have good chances for most of the other UCs. Probably reachish for UCLA, since that’s on par with Cal. The lower tier UCs are probably safeties for you.

Safety: UCD, Cal Poly SLO, SDSU, SFSU
Safe Match: UCSB

beastmaster if UCD and Cal Poly are a safe match so is UCSB.

You have worked hard-and have had unusual circumstances-you can be proud of your accomplishments! You have a great shot-hang in there!

Voiceofreason,

UCSB’s admission rate: 52%
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsb.html</a>
UCD’s admission rate: 68%
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucd.html</a></p>

That’s a 16% difference in admission rate. UCSB is harder to get into than UCD.

The admit rate is not an important statistic in comparison to the quality of the students admitted. They are essentially the same for these schools. At Davis they would use a point system while SB is very GPA focused. For Cal Poly they have a formula. This is especially important when looking at the stats posted by beastmaster from an admissions standpoint. So as not to high jack this thread, this candidate is very qualified for any of their choices and could likely see scholarship money. Good luck to you dude.

these stats show that SB gets a lot of applications that are from under qualified students

A-G courses
CAL 47.2
UCSD 46.8

“The admit rate is not an important statistic in comparison to the quality of the students admitted. They are essentially the same for these schools.”

The admit rate is indicative of how selective the school is. By being selective, a school offers admissions to the applicants with the highest stats and potential. While it does not say everything about a school, it does reveal what the quality of the student body is like. It’s not an unimportant statistic as you say it is.
As for the admission rate being “essentially the same,” that is an ignorant statement. There is a huge gap between 68% and 52%, unless you choose to round the 16% difference. Take Harvard and Berkeley for example. Harvard’s admission rate is around 10% while Berkeley’s is around 25%. There’s about a 15% difference, does that mean that they are essentially the same? No. The difference is huge, they are not “essentially” the same.

“At Davis they would use a point system while SB is very GPA focused. For Cal Poly they have a formula.”

Post your sources. Show me a chart that says UCSB places a heavy emphasis on GPA. If you can’t back this up, then you have proven nothing. Don’t make unsubstantiated claims.

“these stats show that SB gets a lot of applications that are from under qualified students”

Here’s some statistics that show UCD accept a lot of these “under qualified students:”
UCD Averages

High School GPA: 3.84

ACT Composite Score: 26

SAT Critical Reading: 595

SAT Mathematics: 634

SAT Writing: 602

UCSB Averages

High School GPA: 3.91

ACT Composite Score: 26

SAT Critical Reading: 609

SAT Mathematics: 631

SAT Writing: 612

Look at the numbers, which group of these accepted students are more “under qualified?” Ding ding ding, that’s right, UCD. Whereas UCSB gets many applications from under qualified students, UCD accepts these under qualified students. Mmh, what does that say about each school?

I agree that admissions rates are meaningless. UChicago has a rate around 38%. That’s much higher than UCB’s. Is UCB much more selective than UChicago? No way. Is Cal Poly more selective than Davis because they have a 43% acceptance rate? No, they’re virtually identical (3.81, 26 ACT).

That said, it looks as though SB is slightly harder to get into than davis with the GPA shown above.
