chances for CMU Early decision II (INFO SYSTEM)

SO I GOT DEFERRED BY CORNELL, more or less expected, and i decided to screw cornell, and i switched my carnegie mellon app to early decision II (they let me) for information systems major, i just wanna know my chance for that and my other RD schools. I also have my senior year grades by now…they definitely improved , continued my upward trend and i finally hit honor roll, i also changed my list of EC and award for the regular apps…

School: The Hotchkiss School, one of the most prestigious in the nation, search the prep school admission forum for hotchkiss and you will see…

biggest problem (explained by GC): I didnt go to a international school when I was in hong kong, therefore my english and spanish grade sucked first year…and she also highlighted my upswing trend…

Recommendations:
1 amazing rec from my math teacher who taught me multivar and linear algebra junior year…she probably talks about my passion in math and how I self studied for AP Calc and jumped a year…she also knows me well in person.she’s also my advisor for mathclub and math team

1 decent rec from my spanish teacher who talked about how I went from a lazy student to the most devoted spanish student in his class…and then go on to study abroad in summer

GC rec is decent

1 stellar rec from the secretary general of a UN chartered NGO as I was a webmaster, he talks about how i approached big corporations, wrote proposals and landed 2 lucritive webbanner sponsorship for the website…(maybe a hook?)

took multivar and linear junior year…plus almost qualified for USAMO, dont know whether this help

anyway cumilative GPA is 3.2 breakdown is sophomore 3.1, junior 3.3 senior so far 3.8 unweighted

school obviously doesnt rank, 30% of the class has cumilative unweighted GPA above me

want to know my chance for Carnegie Mellon Early Decision II (i just switched here) for Info System major

I’m surprised you got deferred by Cornell with perfect SAT II and Math SAT scores. Not to mention your string of 5’s in AP exams and taking multivariable calculus and linear algebra in your junior year and number theory as a sophomore (though I doubt any of these subjects is taught properly by High School teachers). Anyway, why are you applying for the Info Systems major ? With your stats, you’d probably get into SCS (for BS in CS) , which is far more prestigious.

all those couses are taught by PhDs … about 10% of the Hotchkiss faculties are PhDs…there are 3 just in the math department
anyway…isnt my GPA like the deal breaker? i mean a 3.2 cumilative is way below average for CMU, and thus i am not so sure about my chance for cmu info system…and i thought cmu CS is like no chance?

I wouldn’t worry too much about your GPA if your counselor thinks it is because you are from Hong Kong - committees are willing to look over such things (especially if the rest of your app is impressive) especially since your spanish and english grades seemed to improve

an upward trend is also very nice to have

If you are interested in either CS or Business, it wouldn’t hurt you to apply to IS and one of those programs- the worst case is that you’ll get rejected from one, but if you are accepted (possible, and applying doesn’t take any more effort than applying just for IS), then you’ll have more choices in April. I don’t think your grades are a deal breaker, especially because they are in languages (less important than math grades) and you have a good explanation- just make sure your counselor recommendation says why your English/Spanish grades were low. It’s definitely worth applying to IS, but I can’t tell you if you’ll get in or not- that’s the job of admissions. Just make sure you have a safety school.

how do you get them to let you to apply ed 2 to cmu? who did you have to contact? i got rejected from my ed school (penn - wharton) and cmu is now my first choice for CIT (ECE) or Tepper.

i think now it’s way too late jcromero, i did it at 12/14 5pm the time exactly i got my cornell outcome… they said it wiill be the last case they take

isn’t ED 2 deadline 12/1?

ya …but they still let me…but they told me the review process started 12/16…so i got lucky i contacted them before that day

bumpity bumpity bump

good luck bearcats

I think your chance is decent but IS has gotten a bit more selective (~31% acceptance past year, still not as hard as CS) just in the past couple years. Gpa may hurt…but I’m sure they’ll consider it in light of where you go and the other factors you mentioned.

From a parent’s perspective: CMU’s IS is top-notch. Having attended recent IS specific graduation we were very impressed with where the grads were headed…many to MISM, the bulk of the rest to the best known financial institutions (mostly NYC), consulting, and other well-known employers.

bruno172 is right CS is more prestigious but you’ll be highly marketable with IS and might not totally work your butt off. btw son was IS major and picked up Computer Science as a second major, also stayed for 5th year for MISM so he was pretty well covered. There are a lot of combinations you can pick up major/minor/concurrent masters-wise, CMU is good like that.

i m very interested in investment banking as my future career- either hedge fund or M&A, how’s the prospecct for that?
