Chances for CMU, Penn, MIT!

Hi! I’m wondering in particular about my test scores, which seem a bit low for all three of these schools. These are my three reach, no qualms about the others! (CMU I applied to SCS and MCS)

GPA: 3.97 UW, 4.64 weighted, no grade lower than an A- and 8 APs by graduation
ACT: 32 Composite, 33 Superscore (34 E, 33 M, 32 R, 33 S on superscore)
SAT II: Math II(630) Physics(620) (what I’m REALLY worried about)

AP Classes: European History, Macroeconomics, US History, English Lit, Calculus AB, Computer Science, US Government, Spanish Language
Honors in every level available, plus a Monday night class my freshman year, summer school(the getting-ahead kind) my sophomore year and a community college course my senior year, no study halls taken

ECs: Eagle Scout, Honors Choir, Secretary/President of Scholastic Bowl, Black Belt in Taekwondo, 1 year of Varsity Tennis, lead role in 2 musical productions and supporting roles in another (several more)

Interview for MIT went very well. I was prepared and asked a lot of questions about MIT, and felt like I learned a lot!

Strong letters of recommendation, including an EXTRA letter from a Penn alum I know personally (for Penn’s application only).

EA for MIT, and RD for CMU and Penn.

Visited both CMU and MIT- fell in love with CMU and decided that SCS is my top choice, even with the 6.8% acceptance rate.

Thanks so much!! Will chance back if requested.

Subject test scores are pretty low, can you retake them?

Based on the information you gave, it seems like your app will just blend in with hundreds of others, with near-perfect GPAs, high test scores, and numerous ECs. In fact, because of your scores, you might even have lower chances than the crowd. I think that in order to get accepted, you’ll need to make your app stand out from the rest somehow. Do you have any important awards or any unique ECs that no one else has? Or can you write killer essays that’ll hook the admission officers? Without those, I’m afraid your chances at MIT and CMU are fairly typical - close to their overall acceptance rates.

Unfortunately with your test scores these schools are out of reach. Most schools do not superscore the ACT - although a 32 isnt so bad - and those SAT II scores are very for these three schools; could you possibly retake them?

@ivanov- My essays were well researched, painstakingly edited and (in my opinion) interesting, so I’m hoping those won’t be a problem. Thank you for your honesty!

In terms of ECs, what more would really stand out? I’ve shown persistence in all my activities and leadership in some, plus about 200+ service hours, and programming experience for a computer science major. I haven’t been able to put down my Eagle Palm or choir president positions because I already sent my apps, but I’m not sure how else an applicant would be able to stand out.
