Hello everyone! I am a high school senior from Michigan and, like many other students, am currently engaged in the college application process.
I am pursuing a degree in actuarial science and recently submitted my Common Application to Purdue, Ohio State, Miami (OH), Kentucky, and the University of Indianapolis. I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion of my chances for competitive scholarships at any of these schools based on my extracurricular activities and stats.
Here we go. I apologize if this becomes lengthy, but I wanted to give a pretty comprehensive picture of what I submitted on my application.
Basic Stats:
34 ACT Composite (35 E, 33 M, 36 R, 30 S, 10 W, 33 C E/W)
3.9921/4.00 GPA (unweighted)
1 class rank
Completed and/or enrolled in all 5 AP courses my school offers
Activities:
DECA (organized charity events, volunteered in school store, served as marketing director - more on this below)
3 years Varsity Soccer
2 years Varsity Track & Field
1 year JV Cross-Country
Student Council Vice President
National Honor Society Member
Community volunteer in local blood drives, community/charity events, etc.
Yearbook staff member
Renaissance fundraising leader
Prom committee member
Awards/Honors:
DECA - Each year of my participation I have competed in a different hospitality-based event and each year I have won both district and state titles, thereby qualifying to attend the annual International Career Development Conference. I attended my freshman year and did not place. During my sophomore year, I took the overall first-place trophy in the Hotel & Lodging Management Series category, receiving awards for both my written test and judged scenarios. I chose not to attend my junior year due to time constraints.
High Five Club at school for students earning a score of 5 on the AP Statistics Exam
Academic honor roll awards in various subjects
I feel that I have strong relationships with all of my teachers and therefore, their letters of recommendation will strengthen my application.
Based on this snapshot of my academic career, do you believe I have a chance at the larger merit-based awards at any of the schools I’ve mentioned? Please be kind but also honest. Thank you for reading and for any advice you may be able to offer, and best of luck to all students currently in the application process.
