Chances for Duke, Vanderbilt, and UGA?

<p>Ok, so I’ll make this short and sweet. </p>

<p>I’m an African-American female with parents that make less than $30,000/yr. I applied for Duke, Vanderbilt, and University of Georgia with hopes of majoring in Computer Science. </p>

<p>Stats:
3.81 GPA UW
ACT: 27 (E:31 M:23 R:27 S:26).
Class rank: 20/468; Top 5% of class</p>

<p>Activites:

  • Design and Assistant Editor; CD Editor; Webmaster for Yearbook - 3 years
  • Webmaster for National Honor Society - 2 years
  • Tech. Manager and Webmaster for Asian Culture Club - 2 years
  • HOSA - 3 years
  • Medical Science Club - 2 years
  • Advanced Chamber Orchestra - 1 year
  • Concert Band - 1 year
  • ASCA - 1 year
  • Freelance by creating web graphics/premade graphics for the public - 3 years</p>

<p>Volunteer:

  • Hospital - 2 years (215 hrs.)
  • Elementary tutor in Basic Computer Functions, as well as Reading, Writing, Math, and Spelling - 3 years (240 hrs.)</p>

<p>Other:

  • Attended a Computer Science Summer Program in an university</p>

<p>Awards:

  • Won $1,000 from Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship
  • Nominee for Principal’s Leadership Award Scholarship
  • Gold Eagle Honor Roll (4.0 W GPA) throughout high school
  • Who’s Who Recipient (Top 10% of senior class)

<p>Duke is a reach but the rest should be safe to target. Your ACT is a little low but if you can highlight your family’s financial condition and your ECs, then your chances could greatly rise.</p>

<p>Are you a Georgia resident? If so, then you should be admitted to Georgia; if not, your chances are still good. Vanderbilt will most likely admit you. Vandy is aggressively recruiting URMs and will probably invite you to apply for a scholarship well before regular admission decisions are made. If you don’t fill it out, you may be rejected; if you fill out the scholarship application you will be accepted most likely, and may receive scholarship money as well. As an URM, you have a very good chance of being admitted to Duke University. Of the three, Vanderbilt is the most likely to admit you if you are not a Georgia resident. Two of the top computer science schools are Stanford & CMU (Carnegie Mellon Univ.).</p>

<p>Yes, I’m a GA resident. I haven’t heard anything from Vandy about scholarships yet but I’m looking forward to that letter! And thanks for the encouragement!</p>

<p>I think you’ll definitely make in to UGA, and most likely vanderbilt, I think that the fact that you’re African American will help you a lot, there was this Mexican girl in my school in marietta, GA, I didn’t think she had a lot going for her, she was ranked about the same or maybe even lower than you and she made it into Yale…so based on that, I think you’ll have like 70% chance at duke?</p>

<p>I’d say you have a great shot at Vanderbilt. African-Americans make up only 9% of their student body and in recent years they’ve been trying to get that number up. You would definitely add to their diversity. Good luck!</p>

<p>I agree with most of the people up there. I think you’re a pretty strong applicant for Vandy. Though I’m not sure about Duke, I’d bet you would make it into Vandy or UGA, but I’d say you would probably make both. Good luck!!!</p>
