Essay:
I have worked really hard on my essay that tells about coming from a small town, and how I want to go to Duke to study medicine, but that I want to return to my town to practice rural medicine. I am also a first generation college student of that helps.

I come from one of the smallest schools in the state. We only send 15% of our graduating class to college, so obviously I can’t keep up with some other students stats with more advantages. Keep that in mind.

Candidate schools:
Duke-ED
Vanderbilt
Emory
UChicago
Nwestern
UAB-safety
U of Alabama-safety

Consider Carnegie Mellon, Case Western, and U Rochester to your list… they are somewhat easier to get into than some of the schools on your list while having the same overall feel.

I have seriously looked at Carnegie Mellon, but their financial aid just does not seem to be high enough for what I will need. My family is extremely poor. I will probably end up having to go to one of my safeties like U of A or UAB because of the financial aid issue.

i think u have a decent chance, i wouldnt give up duke and start looking at carnegie mellon and such, u stand a decent chance as is

U should definitely apply to Duke ED… chances look pretty good.
You may also want to consider U-Penn and Columbia… both have strong premed programs.

your chances are probably better than decent…i say apply
