If your work is to help support your family and takes considerable time out of your day, I would strongly suggest making that known in your application to make up for any perceived lack of ECs.

I’m confused about your age. How old are you? If you have been working for 10 years, does that mean you are 28?

When did you last take your SAT? More than 3 years ago? Within the last 3 years?

When did you take classes at a local college? During high school or after high school?

more like 8/9 years. no, its not work work. it’s a family business and just on weekends. family business doesnt have any age laws. and it was safe, no dangers. infact, police would regular patrol the area and they had no problem with me working there.

My kid was a longtime worker at our family business. She spent her life outside of school there and knew it backward and forward. Long before she was an official employee, she could ring up sales, explain products and do the windows. I am a single mom and she simply had to hang out at work with me until she was old enough to be home alone. By that time, she was a paid employee anyway. She had great stories to tell about this in her applications. She’s a junior at Harvard now and was accepted at many selective schools. Make sure you tell your story; not a lot of kids live this way anymore. Good luck.

I am a family business kid myself. Been working since the age of seven. Not sure if it helped, but I mentioned it in my app, and I was accepted as well. Again though, it probably isn’t the only reason I got in.

Congratulations, NewYork! My daughter was a stellar student, of course, as I’m sure you are. I think it just helped her appear human, with some interesting experiences. Good luck to you.

Scores are on point. I mean once you are 2250+ there’s no difference. You have no EC’s. I mean Harvard “requires” an impressive array of activities thatexpress dedication, exploration, and achievement. You also need to decide a major even if you’re truly undecided. My cousin (a Harvard sophomore) tells me they look unfavorably upon undecided. If you really can’t decide look at Yale, Brown, or Columbia - they like undecided because it “stimulates exploration.” We can’t really chance you for Harvard. Rather, merely provide you with some reinforcement that you have your foot in the admissions door. I was deferred then rejected with 36 ACT and, from what people told me, impressive EC’s. Good luck! Those scores guve you hope!

Hi chancemepl, why do you think your SAT is not low? I mean, where do you find that kind of information? My SAT is same same as yours, so I am a bit concerned. Thks anw
