University of Wisconsin- Madison OOS

Are the OOS schools on your list affordable since many give little to no FA as an OOS applicant. Example: UCLA will cost you around $60K/year to attend.

Your UW GPA of 3.7 is not low especially if you are taking a very rigorous schedule.

Intended major?

I can afford out of state tuition and my intended major is physics.

I don’t think your chances are especially good at UT-Austin, because they are very, very competitive for out-of-state applicants. They are required to admit the top 7% (I think; I might have the number wrong) of students from every high school in Texas, leaving very little room for other applicants. Other high-performing in-state students are favored over non-residents. Your UC-weighted GPA will be the determining factor for your prospects at UCLA. BC is possible, but I suspect a lot will depend on the applicant pool from your own high-school and neighboring communities. If you’re from Massachusetts and unhooked, your competition might be too intense. Is it your first choice? I’d say it’s an academic match, otherwise. WashU will like your test scores, but it’s a reach for almost everyone. If it’s your first choice, make that clear. I think your chances at Tulane are very good, and I recommend applying for non-binding Early Notification. My son got in, albeit without a nickel in financial aid (need-based or merit), with considerably lower stats than yours.

@Lionking973,

You are more than fine imo. The key to college these days is $$ that is the biggest factor I see all of these chance threads and what emphatically will stop MOST DREAMS is $$. Who can afford 50-80k/yr and then sleep at night and think “This is a good investment?”

Better off to go instate and put the money in a trust and let the child retire at 45 imo, but alas, your stats are fine top .5% you have a solid shot at any of those schools.

As someone who has spent months in Austin and months in New Orleans I don’t man I would probably pick NOLA. Austin was awesome 5 years ago, but horrid traffic, everything expensive, and it getting worse everyday would push me to Tulane over UTA.

No comment on the other schools. Now go hug your parents for forking over 200K for your undergrad degree. If it were me I would say “Hey, I’ll stay close to home if you put 100k in a trust and I’ll go to school local.” look at the stats you will come out way way ahead.
