Hi. Based on my current academic performances, how wouldm I have to do on the SAT and SAt IIs to get good chances of getting in? Assume that anything but the SAT and SAT II scores are set.

Also, based on current set of grades and such, except for the lack of SAt IIs, what are my chances?

Academic Performance
GPA on 4 scale: 3.79 unweighted

Testing
SAT Math: 710 (Will retake)
SAT Critical Reading: 700 (Will retake)
SAT Writing: 770 (Will retake)
SAT II Physics: Will take as soon as possible
SAT II Math I: Will take as soon as possible
AP World History: 5
AP Psychology: Not received yet (4 or 5 expected)
AP US History: Not received yet (4 or 5 expected)
AP English Language: Not received yet (4 expected)
AP English Literature: Will be taking senior year
AP BC Calculus: Will be taking senior year
AP US Government: Will be taking senior year
AP Biology: Will be taking senior year
All my other classes during high school have been honors class save for non-honors Spanish in 9th grade before transfering to honors Spanish once I got into 1oth grade.

Extra-Curriculars (Grades in)
Fencing Team (11,12)
Key Club (10,11,12)
ARISTA Honor Society -Local NHS chapter (11,12)
NY Blood Center Volunteer - as part of Key Club and also outside Key Club (11,12)
FBLA (11, early 12) but I decided it wasn’t really the club for me so I left. I don’t intend to insincerely take many extracurirculars just to pack my record.
Helping children once a month at my church on Sundays since early 2011.

Class rank or estimated percentile? SAT score is low, need work on CR/Math (as you know).

I expect at least 15%th percent in my school. Though chances are, I’m estimating lower then I will probably get. Will 740s in Math and Reading be enough? What about 740 in SAT II Math I and SAT II Physics?

try and get 740+ on SAT I math and 720+ reading. For SATII Math2 above 750-760, physics 740

Thanks for those estimates. I know my minimum goal then.

I noticed in another thread that you are interested in CS or EECS degrees. Maybe you are confusing MCS (the Mellon College of Sciences) with SCS (the School of Computer Science). If SCS, and not MCS, is the college you are interested in, you’ll need higher SAT scores. The middle 50 % percentiles in 2011-2012 were

CR: 700-780
M: 760-800
W: 700-780

Average GPA: 3.82

For MCS, which does not offer CS or EECS degrees, the ranges were much lower, namely

CR: 670-760
M: 730-800
W: 680-770

Average GPA: 3.72

Has CMU actually said how much they care about writing? I took it back when it was still a SAT II section and got something like a 530 and still got in. Also, if you’re in Calc BC you should probably take the Math IIc section. It’s going to be aligned a lot more with what you’ve studied recently than Ic.

AP Grade Update
AP Psychology: 5
AP US History: 5
AP English Language: 5

As extracurricular leadership positions are very important at top colleges, would I essentially have no chance of getting into the aforementioned colleges if I lack any sort of leadership position?
