Chances for NJ kid

I was never really thinking about Northwestern but once I started looking at it recently I realized it might be a good fit for me personally, however I’m not sure what kind of chances I have at getting in. I go to a very competitive HS in NJ that sends about a dozen kids to Ivies every year.

GPA: 3.6 UW (no clue weighted, but all AP/IB/Honors classes)
AP/IB Classes: AP US History, AP Chem, AP English, AP Government, AP European History, AP Statistics, IB Physics, IB Psychology
SAT: 800 V 770 M 710 W
SAT II: I’m taking US History & MathIIC in October, I expect to get a 750+ for history, not so sure about math but I should crack 700
AP Tests: 5 for US History & 4 for Chem
EC: Three years mock trial (two time county champions, competed in state tournament twice), Three years newspaper (two years as editor, one as EIC), two years student council (one year as secretary), Local chapter of Heifer International Co-Founder, Four years of hockey

Have you taken calculus? If so, was it regular, AP-AB or AP-BC?

I haven’t taken calculus. I’m not really a “math person” so I had no desire whatsoever to take it, I found that statistics is probably more useful for me.

The general rule (and there are exceptions) is that arts and sciences schools at the level of NU generally like to see that applicants have taken Calculus and Physics. Your math SAT is excellent (as is your reading), so they might look the other way vis-a-vis the absence of calculus.
Your GPA is certainly adequate, especially given the level of difficulty of your courses, but it is unexceptional by NU standards.
I think that you have a good shot, but this year is likely to be unbelievably competitive at NU, given the increases in applications the last couple of years, so I would expect you to be in the thick of a large group of highly qualified applicants, and there simply won’t be room for them all. Write a knock-out essay to distinguish your application.

How would applying to Medill affect chances?

I have to strongly disagree with WCASparent. The fact that you haven’t taken calculus is not even remotely an issue in a course list that includes AP chem, IB physics, and AP stats UNLESS you’re applying in engineering. Your GPA, I would again disagree, is adequate, but just that - fortunately compensated somewhat by a history of very strong course selections. Your SATs are very strong and ECs are strong. If you apply to Medill with a 2 year newspaper editorship, 800 verbal SAT, and AP english to present, you should be a very strong candidate.
